Pls help: I couples matched with my fiance this cycle to the same residency program, in a state where I don’t have any family or friends, but now the wedding has been called off. The idea of having to work with my ex in a place where I’m completely alone is extremely challenging and I want to find a program in my home city. Has anyone gotten a waiver or successfully transferred in a similar situation? Should I reach out to PDs individually?

I’m willing to wait and re-apply next cycle but am worried that my chances will be much lower.

Likely the best you can do is to reach out to your PD of the program you matched into, very briefly share that you and your former fiancé have called it quits, preemptively apologize for any issues this could cause, THEN ask if it is possible to not be scheduled on the same rotations at the same time.

Depending on the size and structure of your program / speciality it might be possible. I know there were some people in my residency I wouldn’t see for months at a time except for mandatory educational activities. If that will be the case for you as well, just sit on the other side of the room.

This sucks for you, but it is what it is.
