Hey SDNers

I took calculusII about a year ago, and even though I passed the class I don't think I'm ready for calculusIII. When I took the class, I missed about every other lecture and neglected the homework. I ended up getting a C in the class. I believe in being accountable for one's actions, so I don't have any gripes about my grade.

Here is where the problem comes in, even though most california schools don't require calculusIII, I want to take it because I need the class in order to transfer to a UC as a biology or chemistry major. Because I missed alot of the calculusII lectures, I don't feel I'm ready to take a calculusIII class. My school won't let me retake calculusII because I ended up getting a passing grade. I still have the calculus textbook from my class, so at this point I'm thinking of using the book and online calc notes to prep myself for calculusIII.

Is there anything else I can do?

On a side note if I get higher grades in more advanced calculus classes (even though they are not required for pharmacy school), will the grades pacify the effect of my C in calculusII on the application?

As far as the pharmacy schools are concern, the only schools in CA that required the Calculus II are UCSD and UCSF.

What college or university are you at right now? are you sure they need cal III to transfer into biology or chemistry major?

I went to a cal state school and graduated with a degree in biology, and they only need cal I.

I go to foothill community college and here are the courses you have to take to transfer to UCSD as a general biology major

http://www.assist.org/web-assist/re...=UCSD&aay=08-09&ay=08-09&dora=GENERAL+BIOLOGY (up to math ID)

UCSD as human biology major

http://www.assist.org/web-assist/re...ILL&oia=UCSD&aay=08-09&ay=08-09&dora=HUM+BIOL (up to math ID)

UCD as biological science major

....well you get the idea

Hey I looked at the links, the one with general biology and human biology major. Look at the second box, you will see that you only have to take CalI and calII and a statistics class or you can do cal III

notice the "OR", which means you can take statistics rather than Cal III

you need math 10A, 10B, and 11A or 11B(stats)

but if you don't want to take the 11A or 11B, you can take 10C(calIII)

Since you already have Cal I and Cal II, ALL YOU NEED IS A STATISTICS CLASS math 10 at Foothill!!!!

Thanks

My first love was chemistry, so there is a chance I decide to major in it instead of Biology.

For all you guys who have taken calculusIII, do you think I can prep myself for the class just by reading the calcII textbook?

Do I even need calculusII for calculusIII? How important is the calcII material in the grand scheme of things (post calcII classes)? Will my fuzzy knowledge of the material hinder me when I take calculus based physics?

Math isn't very understand by just 'reading' your textbook. You need to solve problems over and over again.

I think you need a firm understanding of Calc I and II before taking Calc III. Calc III is not different stuff from previous calcs, it's just harder and more in depth, so you should have a good foundation. How are you going to solve triple integrals if you can't solve single integrals very well?

At the same time, I seriously don't understand why Calc III is necessary for a bio or chem major. At our school, you only need up to calc II, and my school is very math and technology oriented (everyone, even art majors and music majors, must take programming, etc). I only took calc III because I used to be a computer science major wanting to go into graphcs - you don't even need calc III for a general computer science major unless you want to specialize in computer graphics.

I hate to negate everything everyone just said, but coming from someone who recently earned a BS in Mathematics, Calc III is just a jazzed up version of Calc I, assuming your Calc I class was pretty in depth in integrals. Calc II had pretty much nothing to do with Calc III.
Email your math dean and see what (s)he says.

Good luck!

totally agree, a chem and bio major would never or rarely use calculus in his/her life.

Yea I was pretty good at calcI; I'm not totally clueless on the calcII material but I definitely need some work. My mind draws a blank when you start mixing integrals with areas and volumes.
