Can EM docs work the same days (possibly a different shift on the same day) every week, or is it pretty random from week to week which shift is assigned to a doc? Does the schedule change every month?
My question is basically is it possible to have somewhat of a constant schedule? I want to know because my wife is also a med student who wants to do peds part time when she has kids. I want to work my shifts and then she works hers when I'm off and I can watch the kids. Knowing when we were working for sure would make it easier to plan for things. Is this scenario possible, or am I way off base thinking this would work?

Why did you want to know?

I understand that there is variability between different emergency department's scheduling. My question is basically is it possible to have somewhat of a constant schedule? Some places use template based systems. My wife works a schedule which repeats every 28 days. Most places have a fair amount of flexibillity in scheduling and could probably accomodate you especially if you aren't trying to avoid nights and weekends

elperro, why don't you contact the place where you want to work and ask them how they do their scheduling?

As mentioned before, EVERY department does its scheduling different: some have rotating shifts, some have constant shifts, some have part-timers, some use only full-timers, etc.

Obviously, all EDs are different. I know an EM doc that has a set Sun-Wed schedule, and I know docs whose schedule vary with the wind...there's something for everybody...
