Just received a Vicodin script for a patient from his father (he stated it was his father when asked) I just raced through the controlled substance laws in record time and saw that prescriber can't prescribe for themselves but can't find anything else. Memory is not serving me well here as I have taken other states law exams and in this area it is all blending together. Any input here from practicing pharmacists on the law in Wisconsin?

Physicians can't write controls for themselves. They can write it for family members.

Just remember if is required for c2 and c3 rx. You need to keep a log of that. The exception being if you know the person picking up.

Hold your horses, there is not technically a rule against it. That being said, this is only appropriate if there is no other medical provider who could see the family member and write an order. The other relevant question is whether or not any patient records exist in the office to back up the order. I would wait to call the office and verify to see if anything is charted. If something is charted, proceed using your own judgement. If nothing is documented, then don't fill it.
