I was hoping for feedback on a potential adversity/challenge secondary topic:

When I was in high school, my family's house caught fire in the middle of the night. The smoke detectors never went off because the fire was inside the walls, so in deep sleep, we were all completely unaware. Somehow my dad and I woke up and realized what was happening. He called 911 while I quickly woke up the rest of my family and rushed them outside. Later, the firefighters told us that we'd been minutes from complete asphyxiation. My family had to move out and figure out alternate accommodations for more than a year while the city government/insurance/contractors assessed whether the house could be rebuilt + obtain proper permits to restore the damage. I was thinking of writing about how I dealt w/ the aftermath (going to school while helping with the rebuild process when I could, taking care of my grandparents, etc.)

Some of the specific prompts I'm working on:

- We are all navigating through challenging times at home and abroad, and physicians and physician-scientists must contend with many instances of uncertainty. Please describe a time when you faced a situation that was ambiguous, confusing, or uncertain, and how you navigated making a decision without complete information. (3000 characters) (UPenn)

- Please describe a challenge you faced and how you addressed it. (1525 characters) (Cornell)

- Share with us a difficult or challenging situation you have encountered and how you dealt with it. In your response, identify both the coping skills you called upon to resolve the dilemma, and the support person(s) from whom you sought advice. (450 words) (UChicago)

Thank you so much :)

I believe I could write convincingly about any aspect of it, but am not certain which would make for a stronger, more tangible "challenge" narrative. Which would you suggest?

Thanks!

I chose not to write an OIE essay + haven't discussed this particular experience anywhere on my application

So what are you going to write about?
1) Reacting to a fire in your house and deciding what to do?
2) Choosing a place to stay for an indefinite period of time while recovering from the house fire?
3) Working through the rebuilding process with insurance, government, etc.?
4) Developing a "schedule" to manage your schoolwork, grandparent care, etc.?

Apologies for the late reply! I am leaning towards 1 or 4, but my concern is that this happened in high school - would this be seen as an issue? Is it preferred to discuss a college experience?
