Hey Everybody,

I dont know if this is the right forum to create this thread, but I have a question about the Bio Pre-Req:

Does it matter what kind of Bio you take as long as it comes with a Lab? As I am filling out my schedule, I see many different options of Bio w/ Lab, ranging from Cellular and Molecular, Human Bio, etc, etc.

I know for Chemistry there is a set General Chemistry I AND II, but is that the case for Bio?

Sorry if this is a stupid question and thank you very much for your help!

If your college has a "General Biology I/II" or "Principles of Biology I/II" series, then that is usually the best place to start. If not, I would ask your adviser about which courses are considered the typical "premed" ones at your college. It may be that the "Cellular and Molecular" course you mentioned is a part of this series, if not, though, you should still plan to take it!

In general, you should make sure that your biology/chemistry courses cover cell and molecular biology, genetics, basic microbiology, human/vertebrate physiology, neurophysiology, and biochemistry. This is pretty much the scope of the biology section of the MCAT.

👍

so you guys think that the prereq requirement would be Cellular and Molecular Bio w/ Lab and not Human Biology w/ Lab ?

That's my best guess....but it's still a guess. As long as it's a freshman level course you'll be fine.

Not sure but most DEF take cellular and molecular bio. You will touch a little on basic ochem, biochem and genetics in this class.

Totally not meaning to hijack this thread or anything, but I have a similar concern. At my college, there are a few "intro bio" choices: Principles of Biology for Nonmajors, Ecology & Evolution, and Cell Bio & Genetics. There are no pre-reqs for any of them, so I'm planning on taking Cell Bio & Genetics and Microbiology or Gene Structure & Function (or all three) and skipping both Principles and Ecology.

Is that okay? Basically, I'd be taking one general bio class and one upper-division bio class. Would med schools count that as fulfilling a year of general bio, or is it not okay to cover that requirement with higher level classes? I don't want a silly decision to screw me over, or to have to take another semester of general bio as a senior just to make sure my hoops were correctly jumped through.

Sorry for posting on someone else's thread! It's just a similar question and I didn't want to make a new one for fear of redundancy 🙂 Thank you!!!!
