Most DO Secondaries ask:

1. Why DO?

From my own research [AOA, JAOA, studentdoctor.net forums] there is a narrowing difference between DOs and MDs, to such a point that it is almost non-existent. Should I mention this fact in my essay, or stress the differences of DO and why it appeals to me [OMT, holistic care, etc.] even though holistic care is practice by both MDs and DOs, and OMT is barely used by DOs in the field and can be trained by MDs with a few classes?

I am sincere about my attraction to osteopathic medicine and what it stands for, but from my own readings it seems as if the differences are superficial. I would incorporate OMT into my own practice if I graduate DO, but I do not necessarily think MDs are negligent since they do not practice OMT and therefore DOs are more competent.

Please help!

You should stress the differences. If you are wanting to use OMT then talk about that. I talked about how it was an advantage to learn OMT. Also since you say you are sincere about your attraction to osteopathic medicine, say why you are attracted to it.

This is a question on almost every secondary and will be asked in most interviews so make sure you have a good reason for why DO.

Good Luck:luck:

Without giving a lengthy answer, I'll say this. Definitely do NOT stress the lack of a difference. I don't know about at other schools, but at my school, there is a true pride on the osteopathic profession. The majority of the profs attest regularly to OMT's benefits and we have more than our fair share of lectures that inform us of its validity (and I'm only 9 days in lol). You obviously have an interest in utulizing OMT one day- work with that. They don't care if you're willing to sacrifice your life for the DO profession, but they want to know you understand what it's about and want to learn it. And there's a difference between acknowledging the similarities in skill and quality of MDs and DOs and minimizing the difference to the point where they question if you belong there. You could always mention how the gap between the two fields is narrowing, but that you still recognize the benefits of the osteopathic training.
