Help with list!! (3.95/525)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You could add a few more schools such as:
Rochester
Mount Sinai
Einstein
NYU
UVA
Miami
Kaiser
USC Keck
Imho Miami will yield protect.

I think OP can choose to include any/all of the T30 he would be interested in attending.

OP indicated 90+40+400

I don't think service trips really count - some have said they're better to leave off your app, even. I don't know whether or not clinical research counts as clinical experience; for OP's sake, I hope it does.

Does OP's low clinical experience sink them?
I keep hearing you need hundreds of clinical hours, but I do know few kids from T20 schools getting into T20 medical schools without hours like that? Does UG prestige helps somewhat?

In my opinion, in general for ECs, the committees want to see at least 1000-1500 hours combined (traditional app no gap year) across clinical, non clinical, research, teaching, and leadership positions; with enough of each to demonstrate appreciable familiarity even if unbalanced across each.

Most say prestige of undergrad, as well as major help very little.

But some seems to recommend hundreds of hours of clinical experience and say research is overrated (except for few research heavy schools).

what would be the ideal number of hours for each category for the tp 30 and the next 30 schools ?

Top 30 schools : Clinical : , Research : , Shadowing: , and Non-clinical Volunteering:

Midde 30 schools : Clinical : , Research : , Shadowing: , and Non-clinical Volunteering:

There are no ideal number of hours, but you must be able to discuss your clinical experiences with confidence. From my experience interviewing at T30s this past cycle, OPs clinical hours are low and I would not rely on clinical research, depending on its nature (did you enroll people in studies/comb through paperwork or talk to patients non-stop?).

Midde 30 schools : Clinical : , Research : , Shadowing: , and Non-clinical Volunteering:

Top 30: 1,000+ clinical, 1,000+ research, 80+ shadowing, 1,000+ nonclinical volunteering.

Middle 30: 500+ clinical, 500+ research, 40+ shadowing, 500+ nonclinical volunteering.

You can do OK at top schools with around half these numbers; OK at middle-30 schools with around half those numbers too. This is just the ideal; many applicants have a lot of hours in one category and relatively few in others and are fine. For example, if you've got 2,000 hours of nonclinical volunteering and 300 hours of clinical experience with 50 hours of shadowing and 800 hours of research you're competitive on ECs for top 20s.

Many traditional non gap year students have less than half of the numbers you are posting and do fine. I believe LizzyM indicates 150-300 each clinical and non clinical, and 40-80 shadowing primary care is adequate. Again, 5hey can also skew but as previously mentioned, target total is about 1500hrs min.

I agree, these numbers seem really high for non gap year trad students. Even if they spend every free moment doing volunteering/research, its hard to hit close to 3000+ hours.

While still being more than competitive for top 30 schools?

I don't have hard stats, but I think most students at top-20 schools take one or two gap years.

And then about how many total hours of Clinical : , Research : , Shadowing: , and Non-clinical Volunteering: for those 1-2 year gap students?

Probably for top 20s 800+ of either clinical or nonclinical volunteering, with 300+ in the weaker category. 800+ hours of research and 40-100 hours of shadowing.

Looking at your original post what is the Clinical research you have listed for 400 hours? What exactly did you do? And as stated above international service trips are not looked at positively by ADCOMS so you might want to delete the one you have and not go on the next one?
