Hi! I would really appreciate help finalizing my MD school list. I don't want to apply to unrealistic schools, but I don't want to be undershooting. Thank you!
  1. GPA: 3.95
  2. MCAT: 525
  3. From Illinois
  4. White

  5. Clinical experience: 1200 hours working as clinical intern; 50 hours medical service trip; 100 hours volunteer
  6. Research experience: 250 hours of public health research, no publications - I know this is very limited, I got started late.
  7. Shadowing experience: 70 hours across various specialties
  8. Non-clinical volunteering: 40 hours with ESL adult students, 40 hours volunteer tutoring
  9. Other extracurricular activities: president of club (250 hours), committee chair (50 hours), IM team captain (40 hours), school desk job (75 hours), studied abroad

Mediocre extracurriculars? The only thing I'd have a concern with is your research experience, and even that seems pretty adequate for most MD schools. @Goro would have better advice/a more specific list, but I'd recommend you aim very high. Think Harvard/WashU/Stanford tier. As it is, I think you're underselling yourself.

Hi! I would really appreciate help finalizing my MD school list. I know I have nice stats, but I have mediocre extracurricular activities. I don't want to apply to unrealistic schools, but I don't want to be undershooting. Thank you!
  1. cGPA: 3.96; sGPA: 3.95
  2. MCAT: 525 (CP 131, CARS 132, BB 130, PS 132)
  3. From Illinois
  4. White
  5. University of Michigan graduating May 2020
  6. Clinical experience: 1200 hours working as clinical intern with heavily-Hispanic patient population(rooming patients, vitals, lab procedures); 50 hours medical service trip to Honduras; 80 hours hospital volunteer; 20 hours nursing home volunteer
  7. Research experience: 250 hours of public health research, no publications - I know this is very limited, I got started late.
  8. Shadowing experience: 70 hours across peds, ob/gyn, orthopedic surgery, pulmonology, oncology
  9. Non-clinical volunteering: 40 hours with health literacy program for ESL adult students, 40 hours volunteer tutoring
  10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc): president of sorority (250 hours), committee chair (50 hours), IM team captain (40 hours), school desk job (75 hours), general member of two student orgs, studied abroad for summer in Spain
  11. Other: I am passionate about minority health (Latino health) and global health; I would love a school with a track/program in these areas.
My list for now: Michigan, Vanderbilt, NYU, Cornell, UNC, Georgetown, Tulane, Boston U, Tufts, U Chicago, Northwestern, U of Illinois, Loyola, Rush, Chicago Med at Rosalind Franklin, Southern Illinois
I strongly suggest getting in more non-clinical volunteering. You deserve to aim high, but to aim high, you gotta be high.
