Hello. I am originally from the state of "I" and am currently doing a post-bac program in the state of "M". I prefer maintaining my residency in the state of "I," but by the time I will be applying to med school, I will have lived out of state for two years. The med school (in the state of "I") application has a line that asks you, "Have you resided in the state of "I" for the past 12 months?" In this case, does the answer should be no or yes? How do you prove your residency in the state of I after having lived out for two years out of state?

I am enrolled in school in the state of "M" part-time while working part-time. I voted as a resident of the state "I". My driver's license is issued by the state of "I". I looked up some residency requirement but did not find anything about part-time students maintaining the residency. Is there any helpful website to my case? Does anyone have any experience with this kind of residency issues?

Should I move back to my home state right after my two years of living out of state and work full-time in my home state while interviewing with med schools?

I just posted the same question yesterday. From what I've found residency requirements vary from state to state and the laws change from time to time. I was told the best option is to check out your states website and maybe call the legislative office to get definate answers.

I agree with this post -- every state has its own rules on residency requirements, and schools within that state may even work under their own definitions in terms of admissions, in state tuition and the like. So you need to check with both the state of "I" and the school in that state. That being said, the typical determinants of residency tend to include include one or more of: domicile (where you actually live), real estate ownership, voter registration, drivers license jurisdiction, car registration, tax returns/payments in the state, and/or the residency of a spouse. Most states/schools require at least one year (some require more) of such residency to qualify.

I spoke to an admissions conselor at a state school during my break, and the counselor told me that students often mistakenly think that holding a driver license of that state (in my case, state I) is enough to maintain their residency. If they require that I have to physically be present in the state of I, this is not a good news for me. So, I should carefully check. The state website is really vague, and their description is not geared toward the med students. What the med school requires may be different from what the state website, so I think I will have to deal directly deal with the state med schools I plan to apply.

Does anyone have warnings/screwed-up stories/suggestions in keeping residency?

Thanks,
CP

As we said before, every state is different! Just because someone has a story from MA, does not mean the same rules will apply to you if you're from FL. Call or email the legistature of the state that you're in and find out for sure. If you don't have the time to do that, at least say which state you are from, maybe someone could help you.

Massachusetts is a classic example. It usually takes living there a year to get residency, but you have to be a resident for at least 5 years (or have graduated from HS in the state, I believe) before you can even apply to UMass med.
