I'm having a hard time getting enough info about schools from their websites and feel that I'm just picking them based on location without any idea if they are interested in a student like me. So, I'm wondering if you guys could give me some input.

Here's a list of schools I'm interested in, but I only want to apply to 5 -6 max.

1. Western/COMP
2. PCOM
3. NYCOM
4. OU-COM
5. NOVA
6. West Virginia
7. UNECOM
8. WVSOM
9. UMDNJ
10. LECOM, Bradenton, Florida

I know I'm applying late and I'm not a resident of any of these states. Does anyone know if that's an automatic red flag for any of these schools? I'm a non-traditional student with lots of research/clinical experience. Mcat is 29 and gpa is 3.5.

Any advice would be really really appreciated. I just don't want to apply to schools where I'm wasting my money because they aren't interested in someone like me...particularly a non-state resident applying late.....thanks!

Have you already checked http://www.aacom.org ?

You can always request further information from the schools as well.

OUCOM is big into letting in Ohio State residents (86%). This late in the game, I'm not sure if it's worth it. You can always call them and ask if the class is full if you'd like. I know I will be giving up my spot in the next few days.

I can't speak for the other schools as I only applied to OUCOM and CCOM.

any other input?

You have WVSOM twice on your list. It's tuition is one of the highest and if your picking by location, you should note that Lewisburg, WV is a town of 5,000 people. (I think) Western/COMP and OU-COM are less likely to take out of state students, and NOVA too. UNECOM is a very good school if your writing sample is an M or better you might bet in there. PCOM is good too; I applied there several months ago and still have not heard back from them. As for the rest of the schools, I don't know much. It depends on your preferences of school size, location, cost, etc. You should look at the Statisical Handbook published by AACOM; it is accessible through their website: www.aacom.org

Good Luck

I know NYCOM is big on NY residents, and that DMU doesn't consider state residency as a factor, so I would try DMU.
Good luck!

NSUCOM takes a lot of out of state students. We have a large class of around 220.

Oh, and most of the class went to the beach this weekend to relax from school and the winter blues. It was 80 and clear sunny skies! he he he.

not for nothing but you're only talking about like 150 dollars of extra fees apply to all of them...if you really want to give yourself the best chance of getting in this year.

you're not really going to know what the school is like until you visit or interview anyway. good luck

at comp, our class size is around 200 or so. about 30 of those are from washington/oregon (comp's northwest track) and the vast majority of the rest are from california. but we do have quite a few out of staters, so definitely apply. i think you have a good chance with your numbers...

good luck!

You definitely have a shot at LECOM-Bradenton. They don't have in-state preference, and last I heard they've only filled about 1/3 of their seats.

I interviewed at umdnj and really liked it there. They are one of the few schools that have their own hospital. They also have a pretty small class size and everyone gets instate tution (around 20k)

Try DMU, or any of the private schools that don't look at your state of residence (there are a lot, but here are the ones I can come up with off the top of my head- UNECOM, KCOM). I highly recommend DMU.

CCOM has excellent clinical rotations, although they are pretty pricey. If you aren't concerned about cost, apply to MSU, they have the best affiliated osteopathic residencies.

luck

I'm a student at WVSOM, I like it here, yes it is in a small town, but I Think that's a plus. I'm out of state, MCAT 30, GPA 3.5, yeah its expensive, but the PBL program makes it worth it to me....just apply, its a good place to go!

Katie, I think that AZCOM (if it's the same as a few years ago) holds a fair number of late interviews. It's not on your list, but if you're open to the idea, it might be worth a shot. Out-of-statery isn't a factor.

I can tell you a little about NSU (They dont' like being called NOVA)--they do accept many out of state applicants every year. I don't think that they really give preference to in-state people. This year, it seemed as if they offered a lot of early interviews and acceptances to try to fill their class....but they are currently still interviewing for the C/O 2009
