Hi Everyone! So the title says it all. I am a NJ resident asian ORM male, senior at a local state university getting ready to apply this upcoming June, and needed some help with crafting my school list. I have a 513 MCAT (129/126/127/131) after retaking a 507 (127/124/128/128). I have a 3.84 cGPA and 3.86 sGPA.
Some of my extracurriculars include:
  1. Summer camp counselor - 1120 hours over 4 summers
  2. Medical Assistant in a pediatric office- 200 hours over 5 months
  3. Hospital volunteer throughout multiple departments: 600 hours over 4.5 years
  4. Medical Scribe- 800 hours over 9 months currently, will continue throughout gap year
  5. President of a major organization on campus: 750 hours over 4 years
  6. President of a university chapter of a national non profit: 250 hours over 2 year
  7. Bench Research - 1200 hours currently over 3 years, will continue throughout gap year
  8. Research fellowship- 200 hours + poster presentation
  9. Shadowing- about 250 hours spread across EM, FM, OB/GYN, Toxicology, Neurosurgery, Pediatric gastroenterology over 3 years
  10. COVID vaccine trials and test kit making: about 100 hours in 2020
  11. Tutoring- 700 hours through the university learning centers.

I am planning on applying both MD and DO and have come up with this list so far (see images attached). Could you guys please provide some insight as to what schools I should add/remove?

Thank you very much for taking some time to provide your insight!

School list looks solid. Keep up the good work, and good luck!

Great clinical experience. You don't seem to have much/any non-clinical volunteering though. That would be an area that you should really address.

Do not apply to:
Brown
Washington St Louis
Cornell
Wright State
CHSU
ICOM
NSU (DO)

Either a donation of a secondary or in the case of the DOs, schools that aren't recommended due to their newness or other concerns such as poor board scores.

Consider:
Saint Louis
Quinnipiac
KCOM
DMU
Marian

Thank you for getting back! I think I did not specify properly. Part of my hospital volunteer is non-clinical, so I was thinking to split that. and the COVID test making was all nonclinical. Overall, I think its about 200 hours. Do you think I should try to get more?

Here is a more realistic list:

NYU-LI
Hofstra
Dartmouth
Emory
U VM
Miami
St. Louis
Albany
Rush
Rosy Franklin
Wayne State
MCW
NYMC
VCU
EVMS
Wake Forest
Jefferson
Temple
Tufts
Drexel
Creighton
George Washington
Georgetown
Tulane
Loyola
Netter
Oakland-B
Hackensack Meridian
Your state school(s)
Nova MD
TCU/UNT
Uniformed Services University/Hebert (just be aware of the military service commitment)
Any DO program. Include UNECOM. Also suggest NYITCOM, PCOM, LECOM, VCOM, MUCOM, CUSOM, Touro-H and -M

I can't recommend LMU, ARCOM, RVU, Nova, BCOM, ICOM and LUCOM, for different reasons. MSUCOM? Read up on Larry Nasser and you decide. Avoid those new schools that haven't graduated a class yet, if at all possible.

Non-clinical volunteering is something in the community not-health related (ie soup kitchen, homeless shelter, helping those less fortunate through a house of worship if applicable).

I see what you are saying, sorry about that! I am starting to volunteer for habitat for humanity but hadn't gathered substantial hours so didn't list it. Thank you for the clarification!

Could you be more specific about how your hospital volunteer experience is not clinical? Also what did you do as a camp counselor?

Yea definitely. When I started as the hospital volunteer, a lot of my job was to transport patients and directly attend to their needs. However, after COVID, the hospital did not allow us to attend to patients and we did a lot of general errands such as restocking, making files, and mail runs. So I do not count the later end as clinical.
As a camp counselor, I was assigned 13-15 campers for a 9 week season and was essentially responsible for all of their day to day activities.

Yes, administrative tasks for the hospital don’t really broaden your view or give you much exposure to helping others. Habitat for humanity is a great choice.
Thanks! Apart from the non clinical volunteering which I will have patched up by application time, do you think I have a decent shot at getting an acceptance?

Yes, follow Goro’s list and my DO suggestions. You have good chances and should receive interviews and an acceptance. Also do not apply to CHSU as it is a new school.
