Help with Summer Plans

I'm a current M1 and feel like I'm lacking direction in what I should do this summer. I applied to several research programs and was not accepted into any of them. Unfortunately, I don't have any backup plans and was wondering if anyone has any advice on how I should proceed in being productive this summer.

Have you contacted individual labs and PIs yet?

Not yet. I was unsure of how to approach contacting labs and whether or not PIs are typically welcoming to med students. Do you have any insight on that?

Typically they are just don't expect to get paid.
