easiest is to take the metro north leaving grand central to new haven (last stop). usually about a 90 minute ride. from there, you can catch a cab to the hospital which will be less than 5 minutes. google metro north and get the schedule.

good luck!

if you take amtrak from 30th street station in philadelphia, it will take about 2 hrs (give or take a little).

if you take the regional rail service from philly which is cheaper, it will take you 4-6 hrs.

You can get from 30th Street Station in Philly to Penn Station in NYC as fast as just a couple of minutes more than one hour if you take the Acela Express (ie, no stops)...mostly runs in the morning and afternoon as a commuter train. It is more expensive.

Otherwise, it takes about 1.5 hours for the non-express trains. As noted above if you take the NE Corridor line which will stop along the way in Jersey, it can take much longer (although I've never seen it take 4-6 hrs unless you are changing trains and waiting for a connection).

I say 4-6hrs as a maximum because if you do in fact miss your connection in Trenton (which you have to make on the SEPTA/NE Corridor line from Philly to NYC), you have to wait for the next train. It's happened to me before. Not much to do at the Trenton train station.
