Is it better to apply to a transitional year program just by itself and go in hoping to figure out where you want to specialize next ex. rads, anesthesio, derm etc. Or is it easier to match directly to the categorical position? Is it looked down upon by program directors if you just apply broadly mostly to transitional programs and hope to get in? Thank you.

Match into categorical position.

As a general rule, it is always harder to match into anything after applying from a prelim or transitional year. As a related but even more widely applicable rule, it is always harder to apply as anything other than a U.S. senior medical student.

You will never match dermatology from a transitional/prelim position.

Transitional year/prelim positions are not for people who are trying to figure out what they want to do.

How many separate threads are you going to start on this topic? This is the fourth. The fact that you are knee-deep in debt at a caribbean med school without knowing how the match works or what your chances are going to be like frankly scares me. You're lucky you did well on step 1. Others aren't so lucky.
