Hello everyone,

I'm a Bio pre-med student, first-semester junior. I've been struggling with school and classes since my freshmen year, which harmed and damaged my GPA a lot. my current GPA is 2.4 which is extremely low. The only science classes that I took are biology and gen chem, I passed bio with an A and failed gen chem and received a D+ and I'm going to retake it next semester. I'm not going to be able to graduate on time because I'm missing a lot of prereq classes. I'm done with all of my gen classes and now I only have to take the science classes. I know I'm all over the place and actually don't know what to do, I was wondering if you guys have any advice that could help, how can I improve my GPA? and if anyone else been in the same situation as me before.

Thanks

Come back here after you retake Gen Chem.

I am not in the same boat but I can give you some advices.
2.4 after 2 years is not a good sign. I can understand when students struggle during 1st semester which a lot of us did, but after 2 yers?
Did you visit your school's student success center?
There are few things that you should consider – general chemistry is usually not that hard, why exactly did you fail it? Did you try to reach out your professor to get some feedback? Remember, you need to pick best professors you can, use ratemyprofessors and search for your school's grade distribution archive, so at least you will get an idea who is going to teach you. I can understand that you may accidentally ran into tough grader 1 or 2 times, but I suspect there is something wrong with your study habits. 2.4 is a disaster, I mean, if you barely show up in class you should already to be able to get at least B-. I can understand if you have full-time job and ECs and don't have strong time management skills like me during my 1st year, but even that does not excuse for that low GPA. Since you haven't mentioned any of these, I assume that you just not very diligent student.
I assume that you have completed 60 credits, so even if you pull 4.0 for the rest of your college career (which I doubt, sorry) you can barely reach 3.2 GPA, which is low even for DO. If you will maintain the same pattern and decide to take SMP, then you will just throw your time and money away. May be you should seriously consider another career.
All I can advice is try to find some academic coach, and devote yourself to studying, otherwise, you should look for another career, sorry. Again, I could understand freshman student, who struggles with 1st semester of college, but 2.4 junior is a huge red flag. May be you should take a break from school, if you struggled that much with general education classes, I am afraid that upper level bio classes will kill you.
I wish you good luck, and really hope you can overcome it!

I think if you retake that Chem and pass it, it'll replace the D grade, right? At least that's how it works for my school. If you failed any other course, try and see if you can retake them for replacement of the previous unsatisfactory grade. From here on out, you'll have to Ace almost every course to have a chance at med school in general. Probably D.O. If you do really well on the MCAT, your chances will increase. There still is hope, but you'll have to completely change the way you go about your coursework.

Only retake <C prerequisite courses. Neither AMCAS nor AACOM do any form of grade replacement on the application side. I would recommended only retaking prerequisite courses with a grade of less than a C. I would also recommend taking an upper division course to show proficiency in any class that you received less than a B in. Beyond that, OP needs to ACE every class here on out AND absolutely kill the MCAT (515+) for an MD shot. If GPA can come up about 3.0 and MCAT is >508, then DO is solid.

I think spb1701 is being a bit over dramatic. Your situation definitely isn’t good but you can come back from it. You’re definitely going to need reinvention as @Goro would say. The main thing seems to be that you will need to revamp you’re studying. You’re going to need to learn how to study and do well in classes. If you do that and have a perfect upward trend for the rest of college that will help a lot. You could then do a DIY post bac or an SMP. Obviously you need to do really well on the MCAT and take a few gap years getting clinical experience and for the post bac/SMP. it’s gonna be a long journey but you first have to change how your studying and the amount of effort you’re putting in. All hope definitely is not lost but you’re going to have to make a lot of changes. Search for Goro’s guide to reinvention here on SDN. there’s a lot of useful information for you in there. If medicine is really what you wanna do keep going for it and get the help you need

@spb1703 isn't being over dramatic. He's being pretty truthful. Every year only around 40% of all applicants are accepted to medical school. That means around 60% are rejected. And this includes stellar applicants with perfect applications. I’m all for encouraging a student but how ethical is it to tell
a first semester junior with a 2.4 GPA that he’ll be okay if he works hard. OP why did you wait so long? What have you done to help yourself out of this deep hole you are in? Have you done any shadowing, and clinical experience? What has brought you to medicine? Maybe you should finish your degree and get a job. Then you can do a post bacc and work on your ECs. Its going to be a long haul and only you can decide if you want to try. But remember, there are absolutely no guarantees. The current average GPA for accepted MD students is 3.7 and it goes up every year.

You need to seriously realize WHY you're doing so poorly. 2.4 after two years of college is not good.

Can you still do better and become a physician? YES.

Try to do the best you can and graduate with whatever you have. You'll have a nice upwards trend. Then look into post backs (I think if you're around a 3.2ish you shouldn't need an SMP. A post bacc for a year (getting a 4.0) in it should be fine.

Be open to DO schools. Read @Goro ' s guide for reinvention
