I'm a first year med student interested in derm. Sorry for the stupid questions, but

Who are good people to get letters of recommendation from when applying for derm residency?

What do most people interested in derm do during the summer after their first year? If it's research, does it have to be derm research?

Obviously Derms, preferably chairs, PD's or professors.
Derm is a fairly close-knit specialty, especially compared to a lot of other specialties, so LoR's are perhaps even more important than in other specialties.
I would recommend that you contact the Derm dept at your current school, and research is fairly important to Derm PD's, generally, so if you could show an interest in both Derm and research so early in your medical career, it would definitely help you. Best of luck.
