I like helping people and i would like to purse a degree in the medical field but i dont know where to go in the medical field like dental or pharmacy etc. I tried volunteering for a hospital but that did not really help me out because i not allowed to watch the doctor when he practices. So can someone help me figure out a way that would help me find out what i would like to do in the medical field?

I would try calling some local professionals or your colleges alum network to try and shadow some people in the field. When you are able to see what people do, it can help you articulate what you want in your career and reasons for pursuing it.

You joined a year ago...

Do your research. Look around this website. Read up on the various careers and try shadowing.

Medicine is a specific field practiced by physicians who hold Osteopathic or Allopathic medical degrees.

do you guys think i should take like an EMT course and see if i like it? because i know my friend did that and since he liked it he wants to become a doctor

The differences between EMT and physician are many and vast. However, they often work alongside doctors and nurses/PAs in the ER. Before you enroll in an expensive and time consuming EMT-B program, you should shadow your friend and see just what they do.

Are you in college right now?

There are numerous careers in the medical field where you can help people. You should definitely research all of the options available to you.

2 month course for $800 (which, in many cases, is covered by a sponsoring department). I wouldn't call that expensive and time consuming.

All the EMT B programs in my area are 2 semesters and cost close to 2 k.

Not all programs are the same.

Anyone can help anyone. That's the whole point of volunteer work.

When you said you volunteered at a hospital, what exactly did you do? You may have to choose a different hospital if you did not get the experience you were looking for.

For instance, when I volunteered at the ER for a small community hospital, I was with the doctor, nurses, and patients all the time. I did not need to directly shadow a physician in order to get the information I needed. In contrast, I would not have gotten the same opportunity volunteering at a larger hospital like the VA where there's a greater restriction on what volunteers can do.

1. Work on being more specific than that you enjoy, "helping people." Many professions "help people:" accountants, plumbers, etc.
2. Shadow, volunteer, get part time jobs/internships, etc. Do research, ask around..
3. Decide if anything else matters to you besides, "helping people." This will help you with narrowing down.

You must not live in a very good location. 2k is way overpriced. Awful deal. Also the semester must be like twice a week or something.

Shadowing and doing research on the internet are probably the most practical ways to figure out what a profession is like and if it's what you want to do. I haven't learned anything about medical professions really through my hospital volunteering, it's mostly been seeing the important role families play in healthcare.

As far as career choice, it all depends on what kind of work you enjoy doing, obviously. What kind of service is it that you want to provide? There's TONS of ways to help people. If "helping people" is all you have to go on, then why not become a volunteer for a good cause and leave it at that? You need to grow and expand on your "helping people" idea.
