Currently am a graduating Senior at UCLA and am planning to apply this cycle. I would love to stay in California and was wondering if someone could give me advice on what schools to apply for. I actually transferred to UCLA with a GPA of 3.93 and my currently UCLA GPA is a 3.5. I am graduating with a degree in psychobiology and I got a 20AA 20 TS and 19 PAT. I took my DAT while being a full time student ( I would not recommend doing this) I am involved in various organizations such as fraternity and community leadership positions. I do have some shadowing but not much and I plan on picking up a research position over the summer. Im wondering if someone could let me know my chances about schools in California, and what schools would be good to apply to outside, though I would prefer to stay local. Thanks!

Apply broadly. Check the sticky for good oos. Your chances at UCSF, UOP, and UCLA is a reach. Loma linda maybe depending on your religious inclination. Western and USC is good for you, but still a crapshoot because of the sheer volume of applications.

Thanks for replying! Is there anything you would recommend doing to better my chances?

You have a good chance, but you should aim for 100 hours shadowing and some volunteer work. You DAT scores are a bit low for UCLA and UCSF. Look for doctoothaches guide to dental schools so you know what the average DAT score and GPA are for the schools you are interested in

I got into UCSF with a 17AA. You'll be fine.

i think UCSF is a stretch but thanks. Im currently working on my personal statement and getting letter of reqs.. i think ucla is very heavily research based so im going to try and shadow and get a research position for the summer. hopefully that will help.

Update! I sent my App in on the 25th and it mailed the 7th of July. GPA is 3.77 overall with a 3.63 Science.
DAT scores:
AA: 20
TS:20
Bio:18
Gchem:20
Ochem:23
PAT:19
RC:19
QR19

only have 50 hours on my app of shadowing but a lot of community services and volunteer work, as well as leadership roles. I applied to everywhere in California except loma linda. applied to NYU, Tufts, Penn, Florida U, UNLV, and Midwestern. Ive been told by a lot of people that Tufts and Florida dont like out of staters.. I havent sent in my secondaries for them yet. Any advice on any of these schools with these updates would be appreciated.. for some reason im kinda freaked I wont get in.

Tufts is a private school. They don't have a preference for in/out-of-staters. A high percentage of the student body are MA residents, but I think that's more likely a result of 1) it being in MA, where MA residents live, 2) there being no state dental school, and 3) a high concentration of local colleges/universities feeding graduate programs in the area.

Really? Someone recently told me that tufts, this year is focusing more one in state. So I looked at their stats and it looked like my friend was right :/

Stats can be subjectively interpreted; you need to look at them in context. What exactly about the stats makes you think they favor in-state?

the fact that there are only like 2 or 3 students of the entire class that are out of state haha. but i mean, Im more focused on schools in California ( thats where im from ). My dream would be UCLA though i think its a huge stretch cause i dont have their average DAT or research, but I would be happy with USC, though its suppppper expensive. UCSF or Western would be great as well.
