I applied to NCSU, and was disqualified for missing an "animal nutrition" course. I took a course in animal nutrition, but it was not traditionally offered by my school so it was listed as only independent study on my transcript.
I explained this in my VMCAS additional info essay section, however they missed this or something.
also I still have time to complete an online animal nurtition course if they would prefer.

Someone please tell me that when I give them this information they will reconsider my disqualification....I'm freaking out

Has anyone had this happen/hear of this happening?

From my understanding, a lot of schools won't consider something listed as an independent study because they can't really determine what material you learned or something like that. I had asked about taking courses like animal science and animal nutrition that way at other schools and was told that it didn't count. I have an internship with a zoo that counted as a science elective that isn't being considered into my science GPA for that very reason.

I have time still to take it online though. Do you think they would reconsider if I said that or is this a final decision by them...?

The only way to know is to call them. We aren't the school, so we can only give you a guess as to what will happen. Call the school, talk to the person in admissions, explain the situation, and ask if there's any way to remedy it.

How many pre-reqs are you allowed to have incomplete upon application for them? I was short a couple credits for the micro pre-req, so I didn't apply there and therefore don't know all the details. If you fall within that range and are willing to spend the money to take it online (all the courses I looked at and the one I'm currently taking are rather expensive) and they said that was an option for you, I'd say go for it. I would definitely make sure it's something they will allow you to do before shelling out that kind of money.

Thanks I'll call them after the holidays. Uhg this is the worst. I was hoping someone would have experienced this before and was reconsidered after speaking with the office.

Calling them Friday (probably Monday) seems like your best bet. Do you have any other courses outstanding? I would guess that if you are an otherwise well-qualified applicant NCSU would be willing to hear you out at least.

First of all: breath! Think calming thoughts. I was accidentally sent a disqualification email from NCSU, too, but a quick email got it resolved. It was a little less complex of a situation, but this isn't the end-all.

Just like everyone else said - just contact them and talk about the situation. It might be that the people doing the initial requirements check didn't have access to read your additional info essay, or they just missed it.

In the future I would double check with schools ahead of time to verify they'll accept your self-study course. If this does end up being the problem and you'd have to take another; NCSU allows two outstanding pre-requisite courses in the Spring. If you've got two left and then would also have to take an online animal nutrition, you're unfortunately SOL. If you have one (or none if you're applying for a second time or something), you might be OK - just tell admissions that you plan to take the additional course when you talk with them and see if they can update your application with that.

From NC State's website:

Animal Nutrition Prerequisite

A course in animal nutrition became a requirement effective with the 2008 admissions cycle. If you attend a college that does not offer an animal nutrition course, you may want to consider taking one via distance learning, such as an internet course or correspondence course offered by an accredited college or university. Animal Nutrition courses are offered via distance education at:

If it makes you feel better until you can get ahold of them. I am taking a correspondence course with Oklahoma State University and NC State accepted it... good luck!
