What's the deal with insurance reimbu for chemo?
I've heard hemonc opening is around 130-140 now?
anybody correct me if I am wrong?
Thanks

I'm curious about insurance reimbursement for chemo as well. I have only heard that the movement is that hem-oncs are now required to be present at all chemos during the entire time, so they can no longer write several chemo orders that occurred in one hour -- they can only write, say 2, or a few, chemo orders per hour. I don't know for sure though. Would greatly appreciate any hem-onc fellow input on this.

Seems like the easy solution to that is having a large room with several chairs for IV infusions so the MD can be present for all of them.

My brother is a heme/onc and told me that insurance companies are reimbursing nearly at cost, making chemo less and less profittable. Only large heme/onc groups that can purchase massive quantities of chemo at "whole-sale" prices can make a reasonable profit on chemo treatments. I think the movement now, especially by medicare, is to force heme/oncs to make their money off general medicine type visits/procedures (H&Ps, basically). The impression that I got is that the glory days of heme/oncs making 800K off chemo are gone. US legislation is moving toward making chemo completely not-for-profit. But what do I know...i'm only a naive med student. 😎

Depends on the part of the country, but overall that figure is slightly high for a first-year faculty position and a bit low for private practice.

[My wife just finished her fellowship and looked all over the country or I would have had no idea.... 🙄 ]
