hi all,

i need some help badly....i am SUFFERING trying to learn the pathology of hematopoietic system (yes...those damn leukemias and lymphomas!! 😡 ). I started by using robbins as my primary source thinking i really need to learn this stuff well since i was told that quite a bit of the path questions come from this section....but then i realized that i was spending more time on it than i was supposed to...then i changed strategy and used the BRS book...but then when i started doing question i was so deeply hurt by the numerous mistakes i made....any suggestions, hints, what worked for u?

Spend as much time on this as one question is worth on boards.

Know the five buzzword scenarios and it is very unlikely that you would get a scenario outside this.

May I ask what you mean by the five buzzword scenarios?

The leukemia that is known for DIC (usually M3, APL)

Where you see Auer rods/know what Auer rods are and look like (also mostly M3)

Know what the lymphomas 'look' like (smudge cells, hairy cells, etc.)

Know the diagnostic features (positive-TRAP, and others)

Know the only leukemia to give increased platelets (CML)

This will answer most all lympho-pathology questions on USMLE (I had zero).

Did you get this info from a book with topics that are most often covered on the USMLE? If so what book? If not, how do you know this?

I recently finished the heme onc organ system and those five facts were definitely highlighted during the course. Beck's Hematology is a good source.

Arent they obvious topics? I mean, come on people...wasnt this stuff highlighted throughout your pathology course?

And I took the USMLE, scored well on it and dont remember hardly any heme questions (it was a long test though).

I do remember:

endocrine pathology (thyroid especially)
kidney (anything you can think of)
weird pharm questions

BTW, I had Ed Goljan as pathology professor if that makes any difference.

Thank u guys so much for the tips....idio u r right these facts were beaten to death during the course but i kind of tried to learn too many details..and as expected didnt remember much from the hours i put in...or more like i retained the small useless details

a friend of mine gave me goljan cds today so i'll give that a shot

again..ur help is much appreciated 👍

peace
