My SO is applying in psychiatry (I am applying in a different specialty) and we are looking all around the midwest. We both have some family in the Detroit/Windsor area and such were looking into programs at DMC and Henry Ford as options.
I am not too familiar with different psychiatry programs but I reached out to some of my friends at Wayne State who rotated through HF to see and I heard from multiple people that the Henry Ford program is very malignant. Apparently several residents have said the PD is very overbearing and routinely chews out residents and attendings in front of patients, students, and ancillary staff. They have reportedly lost at least one resident every year under the current PD ("forced out" was the term used, which scares me) and there are only 3 PGY-4s? Is this accurate or would there be any way to tell? Two of the students who matched psychiatry from Wayne State told my SO they would rather have left the state than stay at HF because of the PD. Can anyone corroborate?
She has reached out to some of her mentors at her current school and they have had less than stellar things to say about the program (and the PD especially) but nothing as overtly hostile as I'm hearing from the students. I know rumors can spread without substance but I feel a little wary that so many people have a negative opinion. We would obviously like to be at the same place and HF has a great program in my specialty but I would not want to see her in a bad environment like this with a malignant PD and where resident wellness is on the backburner.
I have not heard much about DMC positive or negatively. Apparently not the greatest system administratively but the residents seem happier.
Would appreciate any input as this is a little out of my wheelhouse. Thanks.
