Hey Apache Indian....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
sure...ill comment. you are an idiot. please feel free to comment.

How do you see rads in the coming years with the obama administration?
(all others, feel free to comment)

I'd say there'll be some serious reimbursement cuts. But this won't be only in rads, it'll be across all specialties. Although some say rads will be hit harder (but just because it's been sort of untouched since a while).

whoahbitc, your name says it all. need i say more?

now i know why this forums dead.

Your thread died because it had no value to begin with.

I think Obama's being recently elected could be the beginning of the end for America's reign at that top.
....
Sadly, many times policy changes take many years to exert a real effect on things, and by that time the politician who initiated them is already out of office, and the new guy (usually from the opposite platform) gets the blame.

The irony of those two comments gave me a real chuckle. Obama has been in office for like 2 weeks and he's somehow responsible for the "end of America's reign". He didn't spend 13 trillion dollars in two weeks, so where did this crazy national debt come from? The U.S. has been in decline for 20 years. The only thing that's changed is our lead over other countries has shrunk.

Obama health care plans "might" result in less money for Radiologists. Making us slightly less rich. I agree this is complete horse****!!!!

I don't give a crap about anyone but myself!!! If I make even 1 penny less a year because of him trying to help working class people have affordable insurance and keeping type 1 diabetics from being denied for preexisting conditions I am going to lose my damn mind!!! How dare he try and help those lazy plebs!!! What have they every sacrificed in this world!!!!

As soon I get a chance I'm going to have one of my secretaries type up a letter to my senator telling him he won't be getting his usual campaign donation if he lets anything pass!!!

What we need are more great patriots like Rush Limbaugh rooting for the failure of the American Economy. These people are the real heroes of our time and they need our support. All I can say is watch Fox News, support their sponsors, try and keep any financial stimulus from getting passed, try and keep everything the same as it is right now, because right now I'm rich and most other people aren't.

It's not brain surgery people, just look at the history of this country. Apache Indian pointed this out perfectly.

So for example, everyone knows the Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover were big into small government, less regulation and good old American values. Then FDR takes office and you get the great depression. Of course the only reason he was able to get out of it was the groundwork those prior 3 had laid out (plus the war, and we all know war is great for economies...). Seriously, war fixes everything. Its a fact that Halliburton and Blackwater have made record profits... why? War Duh!

Now look at Clinton, that idiot screwed everything up by trying to help people and look what happen to the economy? It's not Bushes fault, that man just got stuck with Clinton’s problems. He was working hard… clearing brush and stuff. Now, probably Obama will get credit for fixing it, when it was actually Bushes great leadership that helped us.

I could go on all day.

And another thing!!! Patients SUCK!! They are stupid and if they don't have insurance they deserve to die horribly!!!!!

On the other hand… those with insurance need my help, and I'd be glad to offer it to them for a price of course (CHA-CHING!!!).

If Obama messes this up, I don't know what I'll do.

I want to encourage all of you to start donating money to Sarah Palin's New Pack for her 2012 run. We have got to get her in the Whitehouse. She is perfect for preserving America as the world's greatest nation.

As Apache Indian pointed out we need to get back to those core American Values. You know, God… and the Flag… and torturing people. Who needs international treaties, I'm an American God Damn it and I don't give a **** what these foreigners think. As far as I'm concerned we need to waterboard anything that might be a terrorist, this is the only way to keep us free. And I mean any one who doesn't support the troops too (that means all democrats, and some republicans like Ron Paul).

Your attempt to be funny has failed you horribly.

From what I've read of Apache, he worked hard all through residency, moonlighting on weekends. Along the way, I'm sure he helped a lot of sick patients. Some of them had insurance, some of them did not. Sure he did it for the money. Why else would he do it?

We are entering an era where over 50% of the population does not pay taxes. That is not healthy for society. Eventually hardworking people like ApacheIndian are going to get tired of carrying the other half. You can only take money from "the rich" so many times. Be careful why you do it.

sarcasm? dude, the truth hurts. Poor people suck, and I'm not treating them ...let them die.

Dear Sioux (and others who buy into this idea) -

I agree, radiologists and docs should not be paid so much more than the rest of the population. That said, they should not have to go through 4 years college, 4 years med school, 5 years of residency and a fellowship only to start their first "absurd doctor salary job" with 150K - 500K educational loan debt (which by the way is increasing every year). Not to mention that during the training period, they worked hours that most of America would not dream of working. Most Americans do not take, nor even know what, call is. Therefore, decrease the salary, but make us max out at 10K in loans and only train for a max of 5 years total (med school + residency + fellowship). Oh, and you must place caps on malpractice at much lower than current (if they exist at all) because no doc could work as one law suit would ruin them for life.

Here is how things really work in America:
Salary is dictated on what the market allows. There are a few reasons for why a person has a high salary.

1. They are highly trained beyond the majority of people and do a task that most people cannot do which is needed by many people

2. They entertain the masses

3. They are in the right place at the right time (entrepreneurs)

Here is my question to you Sioux and all others who cry foul at doctors and lawyers making so much:

Why do you not demand that athletes, movie stars, TV producers, main news anchors and rock stars make normal salaries? Why is there not this outrage and government mandate on them? It is funny to me - Hollywood was one of Obama's big supporters. You see actors and actresses, singers etc up on stage talking about Obama bringing change, helping the environment and helping with class warfare - yet here are these people who live on a planet that most Americans could not even imagine! These people are vastly richer than the majority of doctors and lawyers and yet they lead the charge for change and no one calls them out on this.

Reality is that if you want progress, capitalism is the only way. People do not work hard for no reward. This is why communism always fails. If you are to have progress, which would happen through capitalism, then the three reasons for why one gets paid a high salary will always apply.

Getting back to radiologists and docs, we go through the training and the debt because this is what the market currently allows. However, if salary is cut even worse, training is increased and debt increases, the bright people who once went into medicine will go into other fields. Only stupid people would go into medicine in that arena because it would make you a slave - desperately working to pay off your debt and never being able to do so.

Sad but true. I'd hate to see Ayn Rand proved right.

I engaged in this debate last night. It tickled me silly that an average to okay-maybe-slightly-above-average basketball player scored a hundred million dollar contract.

Let's say they cut all NBA salaries to $1mil/year. The line to enter the NBA would still wrap around most arenas twice.

I'm pretty sure the same thing resonates among actors. And rock stars. And pretty much all entertainers.

I'm curious why there isn't any pressure to slash their pay in light of everything else that's going on with today's economy.

People view entertainers and professional athletes differently from medical professionals. How many Hollywood celebrities are there that can rake in millions of dollars for a movie? Maybe 50 or so? How many players are there in the NBA? 30 teams x 15 players per roster = 450. Of those, maybe only about 50% actually make million dollar contracts, so only about 225 NBA players are making millions per year. That's only a fraction of the amount of physicians in any one city. People view physicians and entertainers differently. Generally, public sentiment is that medicine is just another job like anyone else's, while big time entertainers are just different. It's also hard to downplay the celebrity factor. There are probably way more people out there aspiring to become famous and successful entertainers than physicians, while can alter public perception on the fields, which includes factors like compensation.

Also, generally, entertainment and healthcare are viewed differently. How many people are there who purchase HD TVs, blu-ray DVDs, concert and sports tickets, but refuse to pay $60 per month for health insurance? I think public perception plays into market forces that drive compensation more than many people think. I don't think that's right, but that's just how it is.

I get your argument.

The actual NBA average though is $4mil/year for a player. So I'm thinking definitely >50% are millionaires in that league.

I was referring more to the ones actually making multiple millions of dollars as an annual salary vs. the ones that have achieved a million or more in their bank account (which the majority probably have after at least one season). I actually looked up the salary figures. It seems that the 4 mil a year was calculated from taking the salary cap (58.68 mil per year) and dividing that by 15 players per team. The NBA teams currently have 471 players salaried. Of those:
  • 364 players make atleast $1mil/year
  • of those, 273 players make atleast $2mil/year
  • of those, 159 players make atleast $5mil/year
  • of those, 59 players make atleast $10mil/year
  • and finally, of those, 9 players make atleast $20mil/year
So if you play in the NBA, you have an ~80% chance of making at least a million dollars per year!

Salary is only one part of their total income.

Salary is only one part of their total income.
Yes, but the contract money is the most significant part of the income for the majority who do not have lucrative endorsement deals, etc.

OK I did not mean to take this off topic, but the point is that people are willing to pay for entertainment, but not for medications, therapy and treatment which improve the overall quality of their lives and probably increase their life spans in general. It makes absolutely no sense....so is the craziness of life.

Hey Sioux...Stalin called and he wants his ideology back. 👍

Take from the rich and give to the poor...brilliant, you should be a rhodes scholar... that makes perfect economic sense! It amazes me how many incoherent liberals are infiltrating medicine.
