Hey Gower--I've just been reading over some of your posts and you seem to have the inside track on many schools. I'm new to this board, so forgive me if this observation has been made in the past.

What do you know about the Duke waitlist this year? I understand they have a very deep alternate list this year. Could this be and indication that they deliberately invited fewer applicants outright this year with the intention of dipping further into the waitlist? Oh please, please.

Thanks

Hey Remus. I am just an applicant like you, but I'm not sure if you saw the TPR post, but one Duke MS1 said that he believed Duke MAY they took fewer applicants this year, because they possibly thought the increase in rankings and NCAA championship would increase the number of students taking the offer. Also, he mentioned that at the Second Look Weekend approximately half of the students (~100) seemed to be unsure of whether they would be taking the position. So, there is hope. In 1999, they took 30 off the waitlist and in 2000, I believe it was closer to 20. Most movement in in June. He is not positive, but this was his belief. Also, the list is said to be over a 100 and all of those students obviously will not choose to stay on the list. Furthermore, many who are on waitlists are on multiple waitlists, so are the summer comes the list will become self-selecting. So, there is hope for us.

I have general information, not specific for this year.

Acceptances are mailed the last week of February. The class is oversubscribed by a factor of two and a wait-list of about 100 generated around April. Rejection letters are sent throughout the entire process with the last rejection letters generally being mailed July 1.

At the time it is generated, the wait-list is rank-ordered. Applicants are asked to return a letter of intent to remain on the list. Wait-listed candidates are discouraged from calling and no supplementary materials may be submitted. Generally, fewer than 10 wait-listed candidates are accepted each year, most of them being moved in June.

Gower,

Just curious as to how you know so much about the admissions process at individual med schools? Are you currently a med student and/or admissions committee member? Not trying to be difficult; just curious cause I'd love to find out how I can learn more about the policies of individual schools.. Do you know anything more about the "no decision yet" categories at Tufts and Maryland (different from waitlist at both schools I know) and approximately what proportion of candidates in this category are accepted, officially waitlisted, or rejected around May 15? Also, can you clarify some of the confusion for us about whether NYMC has two waitlists or one? If there are 2 waitlists at NYMC, how can you tell which one you are on? thanks very much in advance for any info.
