Hey guys this is my first post as a member of the forum, and i really need everyones help. I am a first semester jr in college and i am in pretty good academic standing. i have a 3.4 and in my first diagnostic mcat i got a 23. i know that i will improve my score alot over this upcoming winter break. my qeustion is that i am in jeopordy of getting an XF in my chem 2 lab. me and my partners worked together on a lab and i didnt cite soemthing a chart i used. not only that but our format looks very similar, but the citation got me. i know its an undegrad course, and i can get the X removed if i stay on probation for one year, and send a letter in to have it removed. my question is that i would be applying to medical schools in the summer upcoming, and with an XF on my transcript im pretty sure no school would accept me. the biggest thing is i started off freshman year with a 3.0 and last year i gota 3.8. my gpa was improving immensely. ive been doing so much my jr year with extra cirriculars and i got lazy on this one lab report, the last one of the semester. now is it possible to get into the carribeans with an XF or is it best that i wait the extra year and take a year off and then apply? i donno what i should do?

i am a double major so im doing finance and pre med, and i could take that extra year to get a second degree, but i donno. im also working as a scribe so i could do that as well. i really dont want to let down my parents and tell them of this XF but i dont know how else i would explain taking a year off even from the carribean. is it possible to get into a normal medical school with a F, because i would have it removed. i would retake the course and probably tell them i got an F for excessive abscences in the course or more likely tell them the truth as to what happened.

please anyone help!

well you definitely could get into the caribbean, but cheating is a big deal and that will definitely hinder your chances in the US, not that it cant be overcome it will just be tough.

And this is at a jr college?
either your papers were exactly alike or your teacher is evil.
And pre-med isnt a major. And jesus christ why are you taking your mcat diagnosistic in your first semester?

What is an XF? Is it plagiarism or cheating?

Don't apply until you have it removed, it will make life much easier.

I received an F in a class my 1st semester freshmen year (due to some BS with a prof) and was accepted this year. As long as you explain your hardships and what you learned/adjusted due to the experience (in your PS or secondary) you should be ok. An F does not mean you won't be a great physician. Prove yourself otherwise via other classes, extracurriculars, awesome LOR, and your MCAT and it will not behard for adcoms to overlook that red flag.

An F does not mean you won't be a great physician.

Due to some BS with a prof? What happened? 🙄

And the "great physician"s get F's? You're fooling yourself. Wake up!

Well, her name is Kandy... So, maybe her prof saw her at work one night and thought a free dance was in order... :meanie:

I second this advice. Either BS with your parents, citing likely burnout during med school, or other reasons, or just get used to telling the truth--it's a lot easier once it's out, and you'll feel a lot better about yourself. And it's the right thing to do. But yeah, I would definitely get it off your record before applying. Definitely.

just so we're clear on what happened:

Did you use an entire chart from a paper and forgot to cite it? And then all the members of your group turned in the same report and you guys got caught?

How do you know you are getting the XF? Is there any way to protest it?

Hey guys thanks for the feedback. i really didnt want to wait the extra year. im actually a junior. i didnt even use the chart, i used my biochem book and this was for a chem 2 lab, and apparently the chart from the biochem book was online also. basically im getting screwed hardcore since it was online and the teacher apparently told us to cite everything even the book, but i never attend lecture for lab. as for my partners they were really screwed since they copied each other. im in trouble because i didnt cite a source i used. i mean i know thats cheating and all but i got it from my biochem book!.. im going to protest it and hopefully not get the XF, but i might get it because my teacher is like super nazi about this kinda stuff. i wouldnt know cuz i never goto lecture so i donno.

and i took my diagnostic my sophmore year summer 🙂. im thinking if i do well on my mcats and get good LOR's i cud give it a shot with the XF and then if i dont get in wait a year and then apply once its off? like summer of sr year instead of summer of jr year?

I didn't say great physicians get F's silly. The fact that u received an F does not mean you are not capable of becoming a great physician. This guy received one due to not citing a chart...come on! Wake up! That has nothing to do with his compassion for the community and their health. Neither does turning in a paper on a CD (which is what happened to me). My fault for not making sure my ink supply was adequate. Nevertheless, I made it! Not one school has asked me about that grade. 🙂

If you do get the XF I would not apply until it is resolved. If the schools keep your file in their records and the XF is gone the next year you might as well still have it on your transcript.

You should fight like hell to get it removed. How is your grade situation in that class before the XF? If it's good, you probably have a chance, if not... I would still fight like hell.

Just don't excuse it to you not being in class. That will only hurt your cause not help it. If you do say it, just make sure you say you were absent that day. They can fill in the blanks themselves.

I think yours is a case of guilty by association. Your lab book was probably reviewed more closely because of your lab partners blatant copying. In the future, you should always go with your gut; site everything and ensure that your work is your own by not even looking at your lab partners notebooks unless it's to help them with equations or formatting.

Good luck. I hope you get a fair resolution, whatever that may be based on your entire situation.

I agree with others. Don't apply till it's gone. Because even if you decide to give it a shot and reapply if things don't work out, the schools will still quesiton that from previous years. Also, being a reapplicant itself is a pain in the ass. It's at least one extra essay for each school saying what you've done to "improve" yourself.

but there's a difference between getting an F and getting caught for cheating. It's not like this guy is just going to fail, he's going to have to say that he failed because he cheated. There's no way to explain that in a favorable way. I can understand somebody saying "my grandmother died and hence the C in chem" but "my family situation was tough and hence the cheating"? It's just not going to fly with an ADCOM.

OP, wait till it's off your record and then apply. It's only a year difference, right? You can get a job or travel or something else with that extra time.

You can't give adcoms a reason to not accept you. There's far to many other applicants without this type of mark on their record. Although the circumstances seem iffy, I'd go on probation and get it off your transcript. I also want to know how you get the XF. At my school it was given by the Honor Board after a hearing. If this is the case, many applications ask if you have had any institutional action, which would include both the XF and the probation. So either way it will still be in your apps.

Hey guys for the XF it gets removed from my record after 1 year or whatever sanction they give, does that mean i still have to report it if it is removed from my transcript as a whole? Im thinking ill have to take a year off. thanks guys i really hope i dont get it but ill have to probably go infront of the honor board. i am just wondering what u guys think of jut applying with an XF directly to the carribean and if i have achance getting into there with an XF?

If it's not on your transcript you don't have to report it.

Found this in a thread a coulpe of weeks ago...

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?referrerid=81776&t=470377

"Think like a person accused of a crime. Your goal is to avoid "institutional action" that is, to avoid a "record".

Instituitional action (including disciplinary action such as probation, suspension, expulsion) must be reported on your AMCAS application and can be the kiss of death on an application."

I'm not sure where this comes from, but I'd bet its true. However, having served on an honor board for multiple years, it really depends on the board and what happened. If you are honest, let them know your intentions about medicine, and give them an honest idea of what you think your sanction should be, you may be able to avoid probation and the XF.

If it could be resolved without the board, it is probably best. Usually professors are willing to work with you to resolve the issue (as long as they, or you are not a prick). Outcomes not involving the board most likely won't have to be reported at all.
