Hey. I started Emergency Medicine residency today...with ICU and call.

No point. Just that I'm glad to be here, a lot less stressed this year than I was this time last year, and pretty happy to have "Emergency Medicine" on my ID badge and white coat rather than that other specialty which we will, for the sake of amity amongst all members of SDN, not name at this time.

congrats. I too started the ICU today but am on call tomorrow. I just realized that I forgot at TON of stuff and feel like a lost 3rd year medical student again. It's insane. I don't think i'm ever gonna take more than 2 weeks off as an attending ( let alone a whole month). I just might forget everything i learned in residency.

but on the plus side, it feels great and truly motivating to be called Dr. and to refer yourself as "Dr. so and so" to your patients.

Fortunately I have a PGY-1 year already under my belt so I'm not as lost as I was last year when I started on a General Surgery rotation. At that time, like most fourth year medical students I had pretty much slacked off for the last part of fourth year and had been on vacation for a total of three months before starting intern year. Talk about being demoralized, not to mention that I had scrambled into the specialty which for decorum and to avoid stirring up the hornets over at the other forum I won't mention.

haven't seen it mentioned in a while. so I thought I would say it.....The Specialty that Dare not Mention its Name!!!

Not funny anymore.

I don't know...I still get a chuckle. Nothing like the hanging out of the manhood respect thing, but a chuckle none the less.

Of course, I just got back from fishing in Alaska so my baseline is pretty damn happy right now.

Take care,
Jeff

Congrats, can't wait for a new blog.

Panda, I thought you were in Pennsylvania.. Thats not the midwest..

He's just jealous because he's old enough to remember when the joke first started. And he's no longer a resident! 😀

Just kiddin' Apol, only props to you. Good luck on the attending trail in sunny SC

Thanks man - movin' right now (taking a break). Anything you don't know, feel free to drop a line.

It was liberating to get the automated email that said (I am not making this up) "Your contract has expired" on June 30, with the body of the email being "Your contract will expire in 0 days".

Hey Apollyon,
you're coming to my neck of the woods! will you be in a teaching position down here?
Hope you enjoy the area,

Michigan.

On another note, we get treated better here from a material point of view compared to Duke. I get 2000 bucks a year on my badge for chow at one hospital and we eat for free at the other hospital where we spend about half of our time. Additionally, I'm paying a whopping 58 dollars a month for health and dental for my family compared to close to 350 at Duke. Prescriptions are cheaper too.

You folks will laugh, of course, but as you know it is hard to make ends meet on a residents salary if you have a family. Every little bit helps. The money I don't have to spend on food as well as the 3000 less we pay for insurance really helps out.

Fewer residents here, too. 150 or so compared to 3,000,000 at Duke. It's a smaller hospital, of course, but not that much smaller. I don't know if this is good or bad but it certainly is different.

I like my program. Most of the residents are considerably older than the typical resident and most of the interns have at least one year of training. They're also not as grimly sensitive as the family medicine residents I am used to. I have even heard a few off-color remarks and some cynical comments. Trust me, it's like a breath of fresh air to hear somebody who is not politically correct telling me what he really thinks.

But that's just me.

It's a pretty good schedule. First year is loaded with all of the "pre-requisites" and will be a typical intern year from a time point of view. Second and third year are all EM except for a couple critical care months with 14 twelve hour shifts per month at one location and 16 ten hour shifts at the other.

You can't beat that with a stick.

Nope, totally community (well, an occasional IM, FM, or GS resident) up here in GSP!

I LOVE it! I've never had a bad experience in SC, and I expect that to continue!

cool yeah I've found that trait in many of the EM residents/physicians. Not that I don't enjoy talking to folks from other places, but it seems like I have to be on my best behavior when dealing with them haha.

This again just confirms the fact that EM has the coolest folks.

Seriously...dead and gone, dude. Burned out. Not funny anymore.

Who the hec died and made you the a$$hat comic patrol? I seriously would have thought that once you got your walking papers that you would have stopped trolling around here to find someone to pick a fight with. I think you and I already danced around that campfire last year and I thought you were done pissing on the Corpsman. I humbly suggest in this small world we exist in that you piss in the fire and not on your fellow campers. I'll chalk it up as a bad mood thing and smile while typing this little note 🙂 Relax dude, you are about as done as one can be now! And you don't have to work with collar-high wearing DD from Wv any longer!

Corpsman, I love the way you try and belittle Apollyon, and refer to him as "trolling". Before last year, you didn't even EXIST, and the board (believe it or not) actually existed without your comments and references to your omnipotent blog.

I learned more from ONE average post by Apollyon than I learned from a month of self-righteous, the world-according-to-ME postings spewed out of your direction.

MS4s, I caution you: Corpsman has some comments about the application process and his experience as a 4th year MS applying to EM that are accurate; But please, don't emulate everything he espouses. I personally know two program directors who, despite his high academic qualifications could not bring themselves to rank him *at all* (which would be a shocking surprise to him, I'm sure).

Corps, I found it amusing as you kept your blog and detailed your experiences on interviews how they contrasted with your growing reputation on the interview trail. EM is a small world, and you can keep all the EM blogs you want, but your name is already being bantered about by some important people in some not too flattering ways. And you're only a 2nd month intern! I like the way you downplay this in your signature line, by the way. No matter what you think you know, there is always more to learn. I mentioned you not by your name here only because I would hope that and suggest that you spend at least part of your last 35 months of residency at Iowa rehabilitating your image, attitude, and demeanor.

Confidence, without humility, is just cockiness. You sir, are the one people are talking about when they whisper to the guy sitting beside them in conference, "that guy is an A$$hole!"

Dude, you need to chill out. Humbly. Seriously.

Believe it or don't, even when you're not around, things keep moving on. Even the comment you responded to is a month old - it took you that long to think of something? (I don't think so.) The joke (while you were away) has come and gone - it's burned out.

If you think I'm picking fights with Panda Bear, you're even MORE out of touch. Don't just blow in, wave your opinions around like gospel, and think that you'll be revered for showing up.

And how the hell am I pissing on the Corpsman? If someone else did the same joke, I'd say the same thing (and I'm not the only one).

Like I said, we already shared this dance Ap. I thought we were squared away. I guess being an attending is just not enough for some people; still needing to come hang out at a place where you feel like you know more than everyone else and others will concede your reign. Maybe in South Carolina, but not here!

Twine, you are getting unnecessarily personal and you are out of line. You don't know anything about me other than maybe 2nd or 3rd hand.

I also shared some words with you last year Twine, and there are always those in every profession that don't see eye to eye. I knew you would always be lurkin and looking for a grand opportunity to fire away. Boy you picked a great thread to do it on too. I guess my comment on "The profession that dare not mention its name" really got you upset heh? Talk about an itchy trigger finger! I hope you feel better now.

I have no idea where you're coming from. Dude, in case you didn't notice, Quinn, Mike, Spyderdoc, ERMudPhud, DocB, Roja, and EMRaiden (among a BUNCH of others I forgot) are ALL attendings that frequent here. It's a site that people will give advice and insight (which you seem to lack), and relate experiences.

You're finding conflict where there is none. I don't come here because I "feel like know more than everyone else".

I have no issue with you - maybe you should step back and, once again, chill.

Not gonna chime in on this.. but I just thought I would put it out there that BKN is on here has well.

After this I am stepping back, as you mention. I'm sorry my comment was delayed to your liking regarding the FM joke. Perhaps if I had more time I would sit here and try to be certain not to crack a wise joke of that nature that would be so outdated. I was just trying to be to contribute and be a little humorous. God forbid. Your reply to it simply came from an angle that seemed more like a condescending cheap shot. If you were trying to be a little humorous yourself, you could have clicked on one of those little round guys on the right side and let me know. It instead just seemed rude.

But good luck in your new job nonetheless, and I'll try and remember our rather nice conversation we shared last year instead of this BS.

You make a good point Ectopic, and one that I should clarify. Of course I know all these guys are attendings. I have shared conversations with each and every one of them and they ALL helped me through a very tough process last year. Maybe I didn't make it clear enough in my previous post, but I was referencing someone who would come here as an attending and speak down to others. You know that I know who the attendings are, and they are not in this category because they don't talk to people like that.

And perhaps I just don't understand Appolyon's sense of humor or something. I'm just not one to sit back and be cracked on and anyone who knows me knows that very well.

For God's sake moderators just close this thread already. 😱

Fetus,

I was trying to stay out of this. I like all of these people and I'm not the hall monitor. I'm here for the entertainment. Although I did use to be the AV nerd.😉

In CorpsmanUP's defense, when you publish a blog you kind lose any hope of anonymity, especially in as small a world as Emergency Medicine. I hate to see his foibles being advertised by people who have met him, for not the least reason than I'm sure I had some missteps on the interview trail and I'd hate to be called out.

I used to think that my blog was anonymous until I started getting emails from the faculty at at Duke as well as other people who knew me personally. Believe me, I think long and hard about what I'm going to put on my blog. It's not too hard to figure out who I am. Or CorpsmanUp, for that matter, given his bio.

For the record I wasn't offended by Apollyon's comments.

How this thread degenerated into a little abscess of fueled animosity, I'm not sure... but let's end this round and move onto another thread.

Thanks BKN,

Everyone needs the principal to step in now and then or the halls would be full of chaos. After re-reading the entire thread from beginning to end, I think I know where things seriously went wrong. I replied to Panda about "The specialty that dare not....." and then when Appy replied, I thought it was straight at me.

Upon closer examination (and now feeling a bit like an Israeli missle strike investigator in south Lebanon), I think I was off target at Appy. In fact there was no quote of my comments in his reply and now I realize his comments were probably directed at Panda. And since I know they get along pretty well, it must have been in fun.

Unfortunately you can take the weapon out of the hand of the soldier but the soldier will always feel like it is there for the firing. Being somewhat reactionary is part of my background and it's really something that is hard to break in the one dimensional world of SDN where no one truly exists.

I think a couple of people on this thread fired a few tow missles when it was probably way more appropriate to send in some Condy diplomacy! I'll step up and say I was one of them because I am never too big to admit my stupidities. I am sure I will do it again, and I am sure someone will clarify my error.

And if anyone is interested in talking with my elementary school teachers or my former babysitters, you might even be able to come up with even more material to deter my running for regional Tupperware representative. 😉

its entertainment like this why I frequent the boards!! I mean come on, I AM doing an medicine prelim year, gotta have some excitement when i get home right hhahahah. Actually I am having a lot of excitement this year, becoming a potassium balancing fiend. boy, do I keep those metabolic panels normal.
