Hello, I am a new user. I want to thank everyone for their inputs, they are very helpful. I also have a question, what did many of you say on your interview when asked "Why dentistry and not medicine" or "Why dentistry" in general? I have been stumbling on that question and hope that someone will be able to give me a good explanation that will be applicable on a dental interview. I am going to have my first interview very soon and want to leave the best impression, that is why I need a good reason as to why I want to be a dentist. I do not think that the general " I want to help people" would do the trick. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Don't go into dentistry.

i've thought of that question but i'm still putting my thoughts together. I would just think about it and write down ideas of why you would be considering dentistry in the first place. What is your drive for pursuing a career in dentistry? No one can really answer this question for you.

You can make it as complicated as you want, but the simplest and best answer comes from shadowing a dentist or working on something dentally-related. All you have to say is that you simply like what dentists do based on "seeing what this dentist do, etc, etc." and that you can't imagine yourself doing anything better and more enjoyable.

Vize's advice is obviously not the answer. However, any reason you come up with as to why you would like to go into dentistry will have already been mentioned. Just state the reasons why you want to be a dentist. You are going to sound cliche no matter what you say...

thank you for the suggestions.

if you cannot answer the question on top of your head, it is clear that you don't like dentistry enough. you need to spend more time in dental clinics and hang out with dentists to explore more about this field.

Vize has a point, albeit quite extreme.

You are asking other people why you want to go into dentistry. Sounds to me like you have no idea, hence should rethink it.

I think in terms of the original poster's question "why dentistry over medicine?", there can be a little bit of a tough distinction between the two professions because both really do have a number of similarities and there is overlap between dentistry and medicine in a number of ways. So I don't think that question is inappropriate and I've actually been asked that while interviewing as well. However, I might have to agree with what others have suggested which is, you might want to draw on the experiences you've had in both dentisty and in medicine (if you've had experiences in both) and if asked again try to point out where you liked dentistry more or where you might be a little more well suited for dental medicine in terms of working with your hands, the different environments, etc. as compared to straight medicine. Good luck with the interviews.
