So my gpa is 3.7 and Mcat 506 (ORM) and I recently received an II from a top-30 med school. What’s going on here? I don’t have any amazing research, no crazy extracurriculars, nothing special about my app. I only have maybe a good life story and some good essays. Do I even have a chance at getting accepted here? I don’t know why a school of this caliber would consider someone with such low stats. Their average gpa is 3.86 and average mcat is 514. I even got a 123 on my CARS section in my 506 score. It’s just hard to believe I got this II and can’t help but feel like I’m gonna get ultimately denied cuz of my stats.

I wish this could happen to me, but why did you apply to top school when you have a low stat, and you don't even believe you may get accepted?

Med schools do not give out sympathy F's or interviews.

So work on the self esteem, OK?

And go read my guide to interviews

You should look at this from a glass half full perspective; with all your supposed shortcomings in metrics compared to their matriculant average, whatever they saw in your application surpassed that and they see you as a potential candidate for matriculation.

Good luck!

I can somewhat sympathize with you as I received an interview at a school where my stats are below the average. It can be daunting to think about; that you will be the outlier within a schools academic data... but what you need to realize is that stats are NOT everything. This is not to say that you can have an absurdly low MCAT and GPA and think you have a shot at Stanford, but being an outlier does not automatically condemn you to a rejection. The first thing you need to realize is that they offered you an interview which means they are interested. Now it is up to you to seal the deal! What I have been telling myself that has improved my self-esteem for my upcoming interview is that "I belong at this school". I understand that my academic scores are not the only interesting thing about me as a person and I will be a terrific medical doctor one day; one that is smart, compassionate, and kind. If you genuinely believe you don't belong at this school, then don't attend the interview, it's as simple as that. I know you will attend the interview though, so make sure your self-concept has been constructed with the idea that you belong...

This! Maybe you got lucky, maybe the admissions committee saw something in you. It is possible though unlikely that it was a clerical error. In any case: go to the interview and try to impress the hell out of the admissions committee. You’ve got a shot at getting that fat envelope: go for it!
