Hi all,

New poster here! Just finished my OBGYN rotation and LOVED IT - I can totally see myself in any of the many specialties (GYN-ONC, REI, MFM, MIS) and/or practicing as a generalist. Absolutely wonderful field with a TON of variety in terms of surgery, medicine, and continuity of care. I'm totally sold, and I plan on applying to residency in OBGYN.

However, I got back my overall grade for the clerkship - a "High Pass" - and was less than thrilled. While my evaluations were SPARKLING (best the Clerkship Director has seen), my shelf exam score was, well, not. The sum, overall, equated to a "high" HP.

Will the "HP" sink my chances at matching at a top program?

Other information: Top 25 med school; 230s on Step 1; involved in a number of volunteer groups in and around the area (STD counseling, LGBT health, Volunteer Clinic); received a perfect 50/50 mix of HPs (Medicine (Inpatient), OBGYN, Neuro) and Hs (Surgery, Medicine (Outpatient), Peds, Psych) in third-year Clerkships; began research with a Repro Endo doc; plan on completing electives/sub-Is in GYN-ONC and REI.

Forgive me if this question has been asked before! & thank you all so much in advance 🙂

You'll be fine. Step scores, letters of recommendation, and activities are more important than your clinical grade.

I think you'll do just fine, to echo THP's comments.

However, I'd like to caution you against fixing your gaze on "top programs" only. You ought to apply to a mix of good programs and not be overly restrictive in your selection.

Good luck!

You should be fine. Apply to a mix of big name academic programs and middle tier ones as safety choices. I would be surprised if you didn't match at 'top' program.

Some programs might automatically put you in a lower "bracket" because you didn't get Honors as an MS3, but the rest of your app can go a long way to win them over. Rock your OB or GYN sub-I at the beginning of the year.

does anybody know how would it affect the application to OBGYN residency if there is a C on an elective surgical rotation? Is this a big setback even if I have high B's in the other rotations?
