My High School grades weren't the best of all. Got mostly B's. Some B's. Maybe an A here and there. I'm getting ready to go to CC. I was wondering does Dental School look at your high School grades, and will being at a CC be "frowned" upon when I apply? Thanks for all the help 🙂

Hi,
I am currently in high school, but I think I can help you. I am surprised you didn't get into college with a B average, did you apply to alot of schools? Public or Private? That surprises me. Anyway, you should try transfering to a four year university. I don't think Dental schools would mind the CC, I have read that it's a good idea to transfer, and then take the pre-reqs at a university. No graduate school looks at high school grades. Goodluck.

I only applied to one University. Didn't get in, but it was a big D1 school. So it wasn't a shocker when I didn't get in. So I just am going to a CC. Are you saying a should transfer after one semester? I don't fully understand what you're saying...

Not necessary after the first semester. Major in something you enjoy at the CC, find out the minimum credits you need to transfer from the CC to the University under that major, and then take the dental school pre-reqs at the university. I think that would be the best route from what I have already read here. Maybe someone else has other opinions, however that is the route I would take.

Alright. Cool. Thanks for the advice. 🙂

First, high school grades are not looked at when applying to d-school. You are safe there.

Next, people do get into d-school after attending CC, but you had better do well in those classes. Sice I have never been to a CC, I cannot speak from experience. Based on what the perception of CC classes are easier than those taken at colleges/universities, it is better to take the classes at a college/university than at a CC. From shat some people say here, some schools do not accept CC classes. You might want to research the schools you might be itereted in attending and see if they have a certain requirement.

Great. Such a relief to hear that High School grades aren't looked at when applying. 🙂 Thanks for the advice.

They might not count towards dental school but if you keep getting those grades you will have a rough time getting accepted. Buckle down.

As the poster said, he gets mostly B's and some A's. I think that if he continues that pace he will get accepted somewhere, obviously you may know a little more, but all B's is a 3.0, and if the poster were to get a few A's it would boost that GPA up. (along with a good DAT) Also, everyone I have ever talked too who didn't do great in high school ended up doing good at University. (the lowest I know of got a 2.1 in high school and he got a 3.8 at the University)

Go to a CC for a year get good grades, and transfer. You want to take as many of your prerequistites at a four year university. Although some people get into dental school with all there prereqs at a CC, it is a general rule of thumb that you should go to a 4yr.

I attended a junior college for a year and then attained my BS from a 4yr university. Got in. By the way I had a C- avg. during high school.

Good Luck, and don't forget about having fun.

So I should go to CC just for one year rather then two? From what has been posted above, it's clear that I should get the most of my classes at a University rather than a CC. What would be the difference if I stay for the full two years at the CC and get the other two years at a University, rather than get one year at CC and three at the University. Just one year? Big Difference?

Example: pmantz states: Although some people get into dental school with all there prereqs at a CC, it is a general rule of thumb that you should go to a 4yr.

My Question: Why?

Yes. Do 1 year at CC and then transfer to a 4yr. Just make sure you get enough credit hours in so that you may transfer. Many schools require 30hrs before one may transfer - that's one year with 15 credit hours per semester. --or you may break it up a little if you are willing to do summer school. But other schools require 64 credit hours like Emory University.

Figure it out, plan it out, and then stick to it!

Good Luck!:luck:

From my experience, in order to transfer from CC to Univ. you need to fulfill a certain amount of units (of general education & some stuff related to major)that takes about 2 yrs to complete. There is usually an agreement set up b/n the schools so that if you do this you can transfer in as a Junior. Otherwise, you might have to take a lot of the same classes over again at the Univ.
My perspective is from schools in CA, so if you live in another state you'll have to verify their setup. Best way, talk to a CC counseler.
I realize a lot of d-schools prefer your prereqs from Univ.; but as far as I can tell there is quite a bit of leeway too. I completed Gchem, english, and some bio prereqs at a CC and I'm having good luck w/ my application so far. The problem with going to a CC but waiting till you get to the Univ. for the prereqs is that you'll have too many classes to take after you transfer. Remember you'll have to take all the upper division classes you'll need to get your degree as well. If you transfered in as a Junior and didn't have any d-school prereqs done yet, you'd be hard pressed to finish there 2 yrs later. Better to get a few things done at the CC so you don't have to take 20 units a semester after you transfer.

Although this might not be entirely true, and if you do a search you will see some discussion on this issue. Addmissions generally view CC credits in a different light then university credits. It is a common perception that classes at a 4yr will be more challenging and prepare one better. I realize this is not always the case, but with that said it is best to play it safe and do everything possible to make yourself competative i.e take as many of your credits at a 4yr. Like I said people have taken all their prereqs at a CC and got acccpeted, these people either already have a degree or/and did very well 20+ on their DATs. Good Luck

Just giving a word of caution. Generally when someone says 'all Bs, couple As' there is probably a C or two or three thrown in the mix. Even if not, the grades he described come out to maybe a 3.1 or 3.2 which is still on the low end of the acceptance 'spectrum', if you will. If the grades aren't boosted, he needs to kick the crap out of the DAT.

And yes, lots of people realize come college that grades are important and start doing better in school.

Believe it or not, some dental schools do require high school transcripts. UCLA is one of them, and I believe SUNY Buffalo and Harvard also require them. But, yeah, the vast majority don't give a rat's ass.

Right. GPA is pretty much that. Not good. But I plan to graduate High School, and kick the **** out of CC. Transfer to a University later after CC, then hopefully Dental School.
