Hi all-

For a while I was pursuing a Ph.D. in microbiology or biochemistry. I have very high academic stats, but I’m definitely lacking compared to other applicants when it comes to shadowing and clinical experience. Can you give me an idea of the types of schools I’d get into?

Info:
-4.0 cGPA & science GPA
-Haven’t taken the MCAT, but scoring 510s on practice tests and planning on taking in 5 months so anticipate a 520+
-Microbiology & human biology majors
-Ethics minor
-3 years sociology research
-2 years microbiology research, including a fellowship
-1 summer immunology research
-200 hrs volunteering in hospice programs
-100 hrs volunteering non-clinical volunteering
-Multiple extracurriculars with leadership as executive board of a women self defence club & relay for life, academic director & community service committee of sorority, and dance team captain
-40 hrs of shadowing total, but only 10 in the US- hoping to get 40 more hours in the US during the next year

I don’t feel like I’m in a good place without much clinical experience. I wanted to take gap years to be in the peace corps, but I’m worried that I might just have to take a year shadowing and becoming a scribe/medical assistant/etc instead. Any ideas on where my current stats would get me, and if I should focus on clinical experience instead of joining the peace corps?

You need another 40 hours of physician shadowing which you are already planning to do. More non clinical volunteering would help. Your 200 hours clinical volunteering in hospice is adequate for clinical volunteering hours. Let us know what your actual MCAT score is in the future. As long as it is at least 508 you could receive MD interviews.
