high yield molecular biology

I have the new edition but I have never used the old one so I can't compare. I don't know if this is new but he uses a fake gene name (sixpack-2) and takes it through identification all the way through many other biomedical processes like you would in a lab. Very cool way to tie together the various lab tools.

Tons of info on receptors and channels/transporters. Good review of basic mol bio with genetics and a review of immune system mechanisms.

I have to say, I am very impressed with the latest HY editions (and I mean the LATEST ones - the older eds can't even compare)............I got HY histo on a senior's advice and absolutely LOVED it! that one took me 3 days to read throughly and it ties in so much info that its mind-boggling (in a good way)..........and I happened to have an older ed to compare with and there was definitely a difference

I then decided to try out HY Neuro and again - loved it! much better than the older ed (and some of the other books I have seen out there)

I just started cell and mol bio yesterday (for this, I don't have an older ed to compare) but it seems to have a sick amount of info in it (not a good thing if you don't have the time) - but if you know it well, I have a feeling the cell/mol bio questions should be ok to handle

my advice - I would get the latest ed.......but use it properly, don't try to learn EVERYTHING ('cuz some parts have way too much detail)......know where to trim and where to absorb and you should be good to go

The new one definitely has way more info in it. I have read the new one and am going to read it again this week. There is about 60 pages in it that are really frustrating because it is way too detailed. But, the immuno stuff is awesome, and there is about 40 pages of virus review and disease, etc... The first chapters are a great review of receptors and cell bio. Overall, it is a good book that is worth the time, but don't let it get to you with some of the chapters being a little too much.

haha wow whoever did this is ambitious....he/she mainly pointed out grammatical errors that really dont matter much

wow.. i really didnt know the new ed. has immuno and virus summaries.. in a Molecular bio book. at first, i thought it would be too much detailed since new one is 250 pages compared to the old 125 or so pages. i know its going to take up bit more time, but i decided to go with the newer one. i'll def. ask for advice on parts that needs to be trimmed, but its safe to bring that up after i skim through the whole thing. thanx alot everyone, esp knight in blue and umn2009.

and abt rumorsweretrue.. i found that site by accident actually and posted it. didnt really go through it since i had no book, but will soon.

I'm still going w/ the old edition....the content of the old book was adaquate then...it is still adaquate now.....I'm not stressing over another 125 pages of minute details that may possibly get me another question or 2. I'll also leave the micro and immuno content to a good micro/immuo book.....just my opinion though....

Just started with the 2nd ed. Wow...lots and lots and lots to absorb, but I say bring it on!!!

wow.. just got it and it does has ALOT of info than i expected. but the funny thing is, its pretty condensed and touches on alot of topics. I decided to skip the entire "virus" part as im doing micro seperately.

would anyone suggest any cuts in this book? Also, the chapters are only few pages long so im ending up convincing myself whats another few pages. Are molecular questions on step1 concept based or mostly clinical oriented. chapters 10, 11, 12 seems depressing. Hope its worth going through it.

Just opened the book for the first time today and noticed on the first chart (pg 2) that it lists TXA2 as a potent vasodilator. Its a potent vasoconstrictor - pretty major mistake there.

Zoinks! That one isn't even on "the rumors were true" guy's list of HYC&MB 2nd ed errors. Good catch.

does anyone know if there is much of a difference between the new and old editions of high yield embryology?

Honestly, what has changed in Embryology that is going to warrant a new edition if you already have the old one? Not much, if anything. Additionally, I think it may be one of the lowest yield subjects. That being said, I got the book last year and don't plan on getting anything else for Embryo (except for FA of course). I don't think it's worth it, considering many people just use FA and do fine. I think you'll be fine with either edition, don't let them sucker you in to spending more money. Fight the power.

As far as HY embyology- I have the new edition and it is WAY too detailed and thick and I only had a few questions on the topic that were all on FA. I read about 3/4 of it and it didn't give me anything extra for the real thing.
I read the 2nd ed. of HY CMB twice and it made me less afraid of the questions on this topic, but it is way too detailed in parts. It is important to understand the topics presented and not the details such as the 11 different translocations assoc. with Spinocerebellar ataxia. The book was worth the time in my opinion.

I agree, embryo is def not worth being picky about. Any ed with FA should be plenty..........

what about the new ed. of HY Gross anatomy... does any body know if it's better or worst than the last one????????

It's long as hell I know that! I think it was around 300 pgs and I couldn't bring myself to buy it b/c I knew I wouldn't get through it. The plus is that it had lots of images!

maybe thats why its 300 pages.....
I just got it today and have to say - it looks mighty impressive. I will let you know after I am done ripping it up

OK, well My test is in a couple months so I just started looking at the HY Molecular cell bio and on the very first table the author list TXA2 as a potent vasodilator (pg). Cross references to any other sources says it's a vaso constrictor, but I was curious if it actually dilates anything. thanks

What about the new BRS Biochem/Molecular Bio book --- that might be an alternative.

I didn't use it but my friend did and he said its full of mistakes and often contradicts itself between what it presents in a chapter and the explanations in the quiz at the end of each chapter.

Plus if you want the cell bio portion you would have to buy its friend "BRS Cell Biology and Histology"

Ok so I just started reading this stupid book and got through the transporters and... this is fuking ridiculous. I'm wondering what level of detail we have to know this stuff. I thought since it's suppose to be HY, they wouldn't put anything in there that's BS... but who world can (or have the patience to) memorize these lists?

Or... is everyone else doing it and I'm the only sucker?

I'm with ya. I sold my 2nd edition and bought the first one. To properly get through that book would've taken me a month and I think that time would be better spent on path/pharm/physio.

Yea, the receptor chapter in the beginning was a little much but the genetics in the middle of the book is 👍 👍 👍

I found the first couple chapters took forever to get through but the middle goes much faster....got through most of the book in 2 days.

do you memorize most of it though? quickly MOAT transporter.. =) j.k.

it's stuff like this that i kept putting studying back and back... headache everytime i see it.:scared:

If it ain't broke...don't fix it.....ie use the older and much shorter version of HY Molec Bio...that book was deemed adaquate as recently as this past summer....but I guess if reading and memorizing 300+ pages of molec bio doesn't wanna make you blow your brains out then more power to you..

I have the 1st edition and think it's pretty good. Very concise (110pp) and has many diagrams.
