I was just wondering which of these books are the best ones to get for board review. I am looking at getting the behavioral science, embryology, gross anatomy, and neuroanatomy. Comments on any of the books in the series are welcome, thank you.

HY Neuro- is awesome for Step 1.

BRS Behavioral Sciences- only b/c it has questions at the end of every chapter.

Embryology- I'd just stick to what's in FA

Gross Anatomy- I'd either stick to what's in FA or use a book called "Roadmap to Anatomy."

I would also add that HY Histology is actually a really good book. I think it goes undetected b/c of it's title "histology" and the fact that it's a little on the thicker side for a HY series review book.

Hope that helps. G'luck.

I would also add that HY Cell and Molecular bio is very good - read the first 4 chapters.

If you read HY Histology, read it LAST. It is very cumulative and even has a good deal of pharmacology. I scoffed at this book early when I heard about it but found it to be much better than HY Cell and Molecular Biology. It covers much of the same material too.

I thought HY Biochem was great, and I read it twice. It broke down the pathways into things I could remember easily and was a quick read.

HY Anatomy made me want to die. Seriously, I thought it was horribly written with poor explanations, especially the limb chapters. I would suggest doing FA anatomy, having an atlas open when you do your QBank anatomy questions, and look at an atlas/flash cards covering your weakest areas. Studying for anatomy is so low yield b/c they ask the most random questions.

I actually liked HY Embryology only because I thought this area was one of my weak points. I think reading this book was low yield though, b/c I didn't wind up having a lot of embryology on my test...like most people.

I bought HY Cell and Molecular after seeing how people raved about it on here, but in the end I didn't get that much from it. I would only suggest you read this if you don't have a good grasp of molecular bio techniques and DNA/RNA stuff.

I read HY Behavioral Science and thought it was pretty decent, but I think you can get the same information in FA.

I almost read HY Histology, but punked out when I saw how big it was.

I think mastering this book can add 10-15 points to your score. 👍

I agree with above but I would also add BRS anatomy, but I would suggest that you get and possible share it with a couple of friends becuase all you really want are the red boxes... They go over very typical OMM questions and some picky anatomy stuff I saw on USMLE last year.

Actually to add to, I didnt find the HY Immunology any good atleast on initial reading. Coudnt grasp much for a subject which is based on grasping the concepts. Atleast this is my initial impression...maybe it may change later when I am revising it. Anyways this was just my 2 cents......

I'll add that I thought HY Cell and Molecular didn't add much. I had already prepared well for this topic with the Kaplan Biochemistry notes and maybe I'm biased because I thought HY Histology presented almost all of the material from Cell & Molec in a much better manner. HY Histology was a great book. I actually called Dudek out on not updating his HY books with some huge errors but have since retracted that after reading it.

A person shooting for a top Step I score really should consider mastering HY Cell & Molecular Biology. Many individuals Step I exams are really heavy in its material and having this book will place you at a significant advantage.

Don't let others deter you. It is very strong.

Do you think the whole book is high yield or are the first 4 chapters good enough?

1)HY Cell and Molecular, 2)HY Neuroanatomy 3)Suprised HY Microbiology wasnt mentioned, thought it was short simple and sweet, 4)?? 5)??

I agree HY Gross anatomy was very so-so. and I already annotated BRS embryo which is somewhat low yield. I must admit HY Histology is a sleeper which covers a LOT of Dudeck's girth and expertise!, maybe it could be #4. It seems like HY Behavioral and HY Biostat when mastered add up to points on the USMLE. Any comment or suggestions??

BigFrank, as far as the HY Cell and Molecular biology is concerned I just wanted to enquire, there are a few things mentioned in it such as Homeodomain protein, Zn finger protein among others which I have not come across in another book. Also my initial impression is that at each and every place the author has mentione dthat these are the number of amino acids encoded or the number of tRNA or rRNA and so on. So how do we approach this?

Can anyone vouch for HY Embryology First Edition? I'm about to start studying embryo, and I ended up with both...but the second edition is about 100 pages longer than the first. Is the first edition enough?

First edition and FA is good enough that is what I used. 👍

I know that this was asked before, but the question remained unanswered, so I am putting it up again. Is it enuf to read the first 4 chapters of HY Cell and Molecular Biology or to read the entire book? Or the remaining topics are already covered somewhere else (which we have read) in a better fashion?
