In my cell and molecular biology lab, I have to give a 10 minute talk and powerpoint presentation on some aspect of genetics. We could pick a topic off of a provided list or choose our own. I choose "Scrapes in Sheep" off the list, but since I'm not that interrested in sheep... well, I thought I could do something on genitic diseases found in purebred dogs. I have to talk about history, symptoms, what happens at at the cell and molecular level, treatment... stuff like that. I was just wondering if anyone had any credible information on the subject 🙂

If you're looking for genetic information on hip dysplasia, I'd star with a medline search.

I would stay away from the hereditary aspect of hip dysplasia if you want to talk about the condition. It's a condition that has probably almost as much to do with environment as it does to do with genetics, and the articles about it are generally complex and haven't yet characterized a molecular mechanism. For an undergrad class you probably want to stick to a less quantitative trait.

Here's an article about hyperuricosuria and hyperuricemia, which has a more clear-cut determinant. You should also search MEDLINE/Pubmed for more articles for sources about it, and Merck and such.

I assume you meant "scrapies", and its actually a really fascinating subject. You don't have to deal much on the sheep disease part of it, deal with the genetic combinations, its possible relations to other chronic wasting diseases, control programs in place in various countries.

My senior thesis for Biology in my undergraduate studies was the exact topic you are considering. I had to write a 30-page report and had to present a 30-minute powerpoint presentation at the end of the year. I have over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and literature central to hip dysplasia, and everything that pertains to it (genetics, environment, diet, diagnosis, treatment, etc.). If you are interested I would be more than happy to share my sources with you and would love to help in any other way you may need. Just let me know! You can PM me if you like.

If you are still looking for topics may I recommend the genetic aspects of Idiopathic Epilepsy? There have been significant advances in the study of this disease and could be covered in a smaller presentation. This website contains a lot of great sources:

My lab instructor had it written out as "Scrapes" in sheep 😛

I just picked it because it was pretty common... I started doing research on it, and basically the only thing I can find on the molecular stuff is that its mode of inheritance is polygenic. I know next to nothing about the problems related to purebred dogs... and I want to be a vet... so I figured now was my time to do some research. I came across a database of ALL the disorders... and well... the list was pretty overwhelming.

I'll look at Idiopathic Epilepsy, and if I have no luck with that, I'll stick with Scrapies.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate it!

I ended up doing my presentation on feline polycystic kidney disease. They just recently discovered the mutation involved and I made my lab professor cringe with these picture of Blackie... hehe http://www.felinepkd.com/engphotos.htm

😀 good choice, if I do say so myself.

Nothing to do with the group that discovered the mutation and developed the test, of course... :meanie:

I don't want to get yelled out for doing homework on the forums again 🙂

But didn't you (Nyanko) and I get into a heated debate about Scrapies/Prions in another thread? I looked but couldn't find it, if you remember what it was, thought you might want to link it. I've really forgotten who hates me these days 🙁 The thread might shed some light on it (Scrapies/Prions).

As rugbychick16 said, it is a really fascinating subject, and if I didn't get in this year, I would have done my post-doc work on it. Its the coolest condition/virulent agent/history EVER- That is not my opinion, it was cited in a peer reviewed journal somewhere.

You should def. reconsider the prion presentation 🙂

EDIT: NM, I should learn to look at the dates before I post...

I don't think it was that heated of a debate, more that I actually do want more sources for people who have different viewpoints on it than I do. It's sort of outside of my field.
