Hello

Just wanted to know how many of you have applied and got accepted?
(which school, gpa and pcat scores)
because i read somewhere that they would pick a minority student with a let's say 3.0 gpa over a caucasian or of asian background student with the same gpa.

From previous experience, you might get ignorant comments regarding your question. Diversity is most likely the focus in selecting students. I am not sure what the percentages are regarding ethnic background of students overall accepted to pharm school, but maybe aacp or another site might provide you with the answer

I'm not hispanic, but will reply anyways.

...more than just GPA/PCAT will determine if you're accepted. ...prior pharmacy experience, volunteer work, having a 4-yr degree, communication skills as evident in your interview, etc. Focus on making yourself the best overall applicant possible, and don't try playing the race card, and you'll have more luck.

btw... I don't know that I'd feel all that great about attending a pharm school that filled its seats based off meeting some sort of diversity goal, rather than just selecting the best applicants possible, regardless of color.

I'm thinking that this thread was created just to piss people off. Knowing how competitive this process is, by suggesting that some get accepted based on their race just makes others who work very hard to get in upset.

AA is one of the reasons why people chose white doctors - because it would be more likely that they got accepted because of their stats and not their race.

But does it matter when we all have to pass the same boards and tests (STEP 1,2,3 for example)! You come out equally qualified.

Step tests are for medical students, not pharmacy students.

Threads can only tick you off if you let them. The best thing to do is to use the report post function and specify what part of the TOS has been violated. That's way better than calling out people in their own threads.

The OP hasn't really done much except for ask for the input of one specific group. If that cheezes you off, relax. Wait until the OP posts again to clarify his or her intentions. For all you know it could be an inadvertent offense. If it starts looking bad. Or, if it is ever really bad to start with that you know it's a troll post or just plain out of line, report it sooner.

I will be attending the University of New Mexico and I am a white male but from what I understand they do accept more hispanics than any where else but that also may be due to the fact that the states majority is hispanic and not white if that helps with anything in regards to this.

Thank you, that's all i was asking i didnt mean to cause much drama.
I myself am hispanic and I wanted to know what were my chances 😱

Wha'ts up with this "Hispanic ONLY" thread? This pisses me off 😡 I'm about to start a "WHITE ONLY" thread and see how ppl react. You hispanics and thinking you need better treatment. Everyone should be equal...isn't that why your parents and grandparents came here? Land of freedom and equality?????

You're going to go to UT, right? What are you going to do, protest the Asian Pharmacy Student Association or other minority professional organizations? Why are people so afraid of minorites empowering themselves?

I second that txpharmdstud! We should all be treated equally!

Well,
you wouldn't have been able to answer my question if you weren't hispanic so 😛
So blah.

I already recieved 2 requests to keep the thread open. My advice would just be to presume the OP is wanting to promote the sharing of experiences, and proceed as such.

Perhaps if the title of the thread were changed to just Hispanic Members or like the viet one.. viet roll call..

i think the major problem is with the exclusion of other groups.

honestly i feel as others do... if there were a "white only" thread all hell would break lose for being racist whereas this racism is okay.

no one has a problem with the viet thread until there was a second viet only thread

i'm all for equality and for sharing experiences however i believe the title is inappropriate

I totally agree, the title should be changed.

First off, all this racial stuff makes me sick :barf:
No school picks students based soley on race.

As hispanics and latinos we have been mistreated and abused in America. But we're not alone. Most minorities have been-even minorities with white skin, like the Irish.

I'm all for empowerment of our own. But not this way- not by argueing that we should get into schools purely based on our melanin levels.

OUR gente [translation: people] mostly grow up in lower middle to lower class households. We try living amongst eachother to share comradery in our triumphs against poverty and as support against the many downforces industrial america bestowes upon us. But as a result, our schools are poorer and lack sufficient supplies and resources compared with our better off counterparts, mostly caucasion, because property taxes from the community is what pay for all of this.

Compounded with racism,
yes, racism exists in modern day America...what a shocker 😱
we are inherently at a disadvantage. Nonetheless, most application processes are done wholistically and are not just point systems based on GPAs and PCAT scores: What kind of life did you have? How did you handle things unexpectantly thrown at you?

We should look at OUR situation of social injustice as a character builder and not an excuse to squeak by the admissions process. The stronger person you ARE and not what you "could've been" is what matters. I'm 20 years old, am married with a wonderful wife, have a beautiful 8 month old daughter, am a full time student (biochem major), work full time as a research assistant at USD (about to be published by the end of spring) and a pharmacy clerk at Rite-Aid. I grew up in poverty...shopped at payless and Kmart...moved all over the state of CA.

My point is. Believe in yourself and don't just think you can default on "special circumstances". If you do, then you're selling not just yourself short, but all of us. Let's face it, will power, not money, skin, or someone's last name will get any of us latinos where we need to get going.

So in summary, Race : build a bridge and get over it!

But I wonder how many members really understand. I sometimes even wonder if its worth saying anything. Most will continue to see issues of injustice with blinders on. Back about 3 months ago I asked about diversity and I still remember the hateful comments said then and it disappointed me greatly to see that most people haven't changed. Really the only ones who know of struggle are those that have experiences directly or indirectly first hand. I can understand why members got offended by the "hispanic" only title thread but if one truly read the member's comments it takes someone with a bit maturity to realize that it was an innocent (albeit maybe a bit inappropriate) use of ideas. One thing is certain, to have this kind of conversation maybe could be continued somewhere else on another site or chat room where these types of issues can truly be discussed in a sensible and open arena with individuals who want to have discourse and not insults, ignorance nor hate thrown at them. And I am almost certain to see someone take these words and twist them as well.

totally agree with jalba22. i think it is absolutely harmless to raise a question regarding "racial selection" as everyone has to right to know. the ignorant ones are the people who just give out rude comments without the decency to read the post first. obviously the person who started the post heard something and have questions about it. it would be all of our responsibility to either confirm or clearify the rumor/fact for whatever it is. he just happened to chose a bad title.

i too have heard that certain undergrad schools want to prevent Asians from over populating by cutting the percentage of asians accepted and certain schools reserve spots for african americans. even tho these are just rumors, i dont see why it would be absolutely impossible for schools to discriminate for their own interest.
