Hey guys! I'm currently a pre-pharmacy student who is curious of the current (2017) demographic distribution. I'm a 20 year old Mexican who is first gen with parents who have no history of education, and completely fluent in Spanish (reading, writing, and speaking). I'm really proud to be my parents kid, and I've also been working at a pharmacy for about 2 years now. I'm going to be applying to pharmacy school this fall, and was wondering how many Mexicans who are in the same boat have had a positive experience in this field? Also, if your ethnic background helped a little with admission to pharmacy school?

Here in Texas, your ethnicity and background is a dime a dozen (everyone got the same story / background). Positive experience ??well...their working so no complaints. What got me in was GPA , wrk experience , skill of public speaking...as an outlier though, I lived couple of yrs on the islands of Samoa so as a white fella speaking a Polynesian language it caught some attention but not a deal breaker. These days it's a business not so much a competition...hope ya gotta plan to pay your loans though

I went to a Texas school, and we had only 2 Hispanic people in my class. In general, being able to speak Spanish is a big plus in retail, especially.

Well, I'm not relying on my ethnicity to get me admitted. I was simply asking whether or not if it influences the decision. I have a strong GPA, work experience, and an impressive resume. As I had stated above, I'm fluent in both Spanish and English as well as 5 years of French. I'm a good candidate, but in my post, I was more concerned with how many others are Hispanic, specifically Mexican, in this field. Evidently, you must not be. No judgment. Thanks for replying!

I was pretty much in the same boat as you. First gen college student, good gpa, pharmacy tech for 2 years, and Mexican. I'm in Texas and Mexican pharmacists are definitely not a dime a dozen, I've only met 1 Mexican pharmacist. I was admitted to my school who had a focus on diversity, so I think that helped.
