Anesthesiology has had a series of articles devoted to the history of the field over the past few months (check jan-march)

If you want a quickie version, I like "Medicine's 10 Greatest Discoveries" by Meyer Friedman and Gerald Friedland. Chapter 5 is titled "Crawford Long and Surgical Anesthesia". You might even be able to read the chapter in the bookstore if you don't want to buy the book.

If you want an in depth study of the subject, I enjoyed "The Worst of Evils: The Fight Against Pain" by Thomas Dormandy. This is a hefty tome (although nothing compared to our textbooks), but it starts with the grape and the poppy and goes to pain clinics and hospice. It's not strictly an anesthesia book per se, but its a good read with lots of facts.

I hope this helps, I also love history and knowing where we come from. 🙂

I forgot this one earlier. It has a good chapter on the origins of anesthesia as well.

"Doctors: The Illustrated History of Medical Pioneers" by Sherwin Nuland.

This one is a great book in general too, not just on anesthesia.

why is this better?

while you're at it, can you give me the link for that book that talks about how surgery was so much better when the barbers did it?

shave and a haircut.. two bits. how can anyone beat that?
