Hey, just wondering if anyone figures the HIV drug side effects are important for Step 2. Thoughts? (Should I spend my time learning them?)

seems low yield, but does come up in practice questions and in review books.

maybe 1 question if you're (un)lucky

its tested a lot in step 1, not sure about step 2 but its fair game

The amount of time you will invest in the 97 drugs, each with their own side effect profile is not worth the one question you might get. It just isnt worth it.

Recognize the "vudines" are reverse transcriptor blockers; peripheral neuropathy and pancreatitis

Recognize the "avirs" are protease inhibitors. LDL, bG

Know that you do any combination of 2+1

This isn't the Infectious Disease boards. Don't go overboard!

The stuff on step 2 is far more high yield than this. If you have epic time to waste, then by all means.

While you are at it, memorize the phone book. ;)

I just learned the stuff off Uworld:

Didanosine and pentamidine: pancreatitis

Abacavir: lactic acidosis, hepatitis,

Efavirenz: bizarre, vivid dreams (and other CNS side effects, insomnia)

are a few that come to mind. Wouldn't go much farther than this.

Also, indi/rito navir's cause disproportionate thinning of extremeties and fat accumulation around the belly.

I remember that question being tested in UW for Step 1.

This is the same thing I did...I figure if UW doesn't test it beyond these drugs, then I'm not gonna bother learning anything beyond them either.

Agree, here are the only other ones from UWorld that I've seen:

Indinavir (protease inhibitor) = crystal-induced nephropathy
Abacavir = lactic acidosis, hepatitis AND hypersensitivity syndrome
Nucleoside RTIs (Zidovudine, Lamivudine) = lactic acidosis
NNRTIS (Nevirapine) = liver failure

Step Up to Medicine says triple-drug HAART is 2 NNRTIs + protease inhibitor.

I just had this question yesterday... Gold star to this post as the 'need to know'
