Hobbies??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I play the guitar, bass, drums, piano, mandolin, balalaika, didgeridoo, and some other rando percussion instruments. I also sing.

Sorry can't resist

Hey SDN,

Do you guys find time for real hobbies...like other than binging on netflix? After talking to a few people, most less academically-inclined residency programs (and maybe even some academic ones) want students who actually have lives outside of medicine. Even more importantly than trying to check that box, it's actually just good for overall well-being.

What are some of the things that you guys are involved in?

M1/M2 I learned Piano and Harmonica, got actually pretty good at harmonica if I do say so myself. Piano is well, a WIP hahaha.

Do lots of ceramics (raku in particular)

Lego. I couldn't afford the sets, but got a big box of random bits in a sidewalk sale and played around with that a lot. Currently decorating a recessed window with an odd lego village.

MS1/2: I still had time to play World of Warcraft. I would do raids (25 player dungeons) with my guild 2 times a week from 8pm til midnight. Held a world record on a fight for a while. I was also taking french lessons, got to B1 and spent my winter vacation in France before starting MS3. Took cooking lessons for a while but I had to drop out because it became too demanding with time.

MS3/4: Dungeons and dragons every other weekend with a group of 5 friends. Swimming every now and then. I sidetracked to do a Masters degree at the same time so it was almost impossible to do anything here and my schedules were brutal.

Before I started Residency: Took Hang gliding lessons (almost got my A1 licence, but couldn't because of the weather), swimmed a lot, and learned German.

Right now: Still learning german (C1), Dungeons and Dragons twice per month, videogames less often than before, thinking about re-taking mandarin (learned it for a year as a teenager) or arabic. I try and alternate between swimming and jogging.

When appropriate I always try to bring up world of warcraft. I calculated today that I've played that game for 10,642 hours (443 continuous days) since 2008. It's a really important part of my life and sometimes people are curious and interested about it. Istill play, but not as often as before

My kids, music (playing guitar and singing), road biking, Spanish, snow skiing, Anki. Oh whoops that last one is not a hobby, but it feels like one of my children
