For those of us with a lot of research experience, what is the "right" answer for do you want to do the holman pathway? I've heard that some programs prefer to have residents that are not in the holman pathway because it means less resident coverage in the clinic. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If a PD or interviewer actually brings up this question, I would be honest about it. In places like Vanderbilt/Michigan/Harvard where Holman is not a dirty word then it is to your advantage to say you want a research pathway if, indeed, that is the truth.

Personally, I think it is dangerous to bring up Holman on your own. However, this depends on many factors and, at some places, the Chair/PD may give you a strong message that they want to proceed this way. In that case, you can ask at your own risk.

you should note that even within programs there are mixed feelings about holman.

as for this whole idea of "the right answer". there is none. if you go on about how you like the holman pathway and you dont, you can end up at a program that you wont be happy with and that will be less than happy with you. and vice versa. in this world where candidates are begging for spots, obviously there is finessing going on and you want to optimize you chances of any match.. But dont be a liar. no one will be happy with you in the long run.

i should add, not eveony who is eligible for holman gets it. if the directors think you need the complete clinical compliment of training, that will be the case.
