I was invited to the "Golden Key International Honor Society" through my university's registrar's office. The fee is $70. Is anyone in this society or a similar society? Should I join? I can't find out if it's 70/yr or one time payment of $70..I emailed them and I'm awaiting a response.

Any feedback/opinion of international honor societies is appreciated.

phi beta kappa is worth the money. the most prestigious honors society
you can only get in when youre about the graduate and have over a 3.6+ gpa

I don't think the east coast has Phi Beta Kappa. This society only accepts the top 15% of the class. But, I found some controversial issues regarding their spending habits. I did read that Bill Clinton, Collin Powell, and Ronald Reagan were all members of this society..that's kind of cool. I am not currently apart of any honor societies and I am wondering if the benefits are worth the money.

there are phi beta kappa chapters in the east coast. I went to school there, and they had it

i think if u have the money, why not, it is co0ol to add it to your resume.

Yes, there is PBK in the East, and I know because I am a member. As someone said, PBK is the "most known", there is also PKP (Phi Kappa Phi) that one is also good ( I do not have that one)
Golden Key, I have, and it is not much, but many people have it. It is a one time $70, so if you have the money... why not? many of the competition will have it... even from your own school. It sure wont hurt you.
You never know if a person in the admission committee will feel connected to you because of Golden Key... Moreover, if your school has it, many of your competition from your school (also good students) will have it, you do not want that thing being the factor... remember that schools also limit students from the same school, just like they try to mix ethnicity...

I have a quick question guys.

I am from Brazil and I moved to the U.S a few years ago and I still dont understand the concept behind these fraternities. For example, if you join one of these prestigious frats like the one posted above, what kind of benefits do you get from them?

Sorry if you cant understand me fully, Its friday night and I am really drunk and typing 1 key at a time.

No.

I paid for and joined Golden Key, Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Delta whatever, and you know what? None of them ended up on my AADSAS, as there are much better things to put on there.

I'm Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Chi, and Alpha kappa Mu. I'm in the university honors program, and will be in Phi Kappa Phi in the spring as well as Gamma Sigma Delta (my major's society). Didn't do Golden Key.
I haven't applied yet (will this summer), but I suspect that it doesn't really do anything. Helps fill out a resume, maybe. I joined because I'm a first-generation college graduate, and I wanted something to make my parents proud. It's a point of pride with me, and helps me feel like I'm doing everything I can to be successful and not slacking off. I'm a junior, and I've already finished all of the honors requirements, and I've gotten into Phi Kappa Phi when it's the hardest (top 5% of juniors, top 7.5% seniors). I'm also addicted to hanging frames on my wall. People say it makes me a gunner, but I'm 28 and have been in the regular-jackoff workforce already. I don't plan on going back.
Don't bother going to the stupid induction ceremonies, unless you like wasting your time while wearing a tie.
I wouldn't do golden key at all, though, if I were you. It's widely regarded as being a load of bull. The only way you can come out of it without looking like a complete douche is if you have a personal story that dignifies it, or if you just don't give a crap. Alot of people laugh at golden key inductees. Also, consider number of students able to be inducted, with the percentage they allow.
Other societies are generally more accepted: somehow they're considered "true" honors societies. They all just take your money and put your name on a list somewhere. You might get a certificate months later. University honors comes in handy, like with pre-registration and smaller class sizes. The university honors classes are usually harder, which help keep you interested (if you're tired of the "teaching to the lower 10%" rule) and are capped lower. And, it helps to win arguments by saying that you're in every possible honors society on the campus (at least it does with me, because I'm a minority on my campus and it makes everybody look pretty stupid). At NCA&T this year, only about 60 undergrads out of 9000 were inducted into AKM and AC.

If you already knew this stuff, then don't cry to me about it.

Just in case you didn't know, you definitely don't want to rely on this sort of thing to help you matriculate. Some universities have honors societies, and (I guess) some don't have any at all. For that reason, adcoms don't really care about them. At least, that's what VCU says, after talking to the adcom Director in person about it. Sort of like how research or dental assisting experience isn't always the trump card that people think it is. Could help round out an otherwise marginal application, but doesn't weigh very heavily.
So, you never know. Just do alot of things; stay active, join whatever comes up (except for golden key), try to get on the e-board of a couple of clubs, or whatever floats your boat.

Just my two cents.

Absolutely wrong. Universities look favorably upon an applicant with research experience. What makes a large public/private university different from a small unknown university? Research.

indeed!!! that is how schools are ranked, how much money in research they bring in.

I know this is sort of a digression from the thread topic, but as far as the research is concerned, it all depends on the school. UCSF has by far the largest amount of funding from the NIH and they told us at our interview that they don't give any extra favor to students who have research. I was kinda bummed because I've been doing research for a long time. I still think, however, that a majority of the schools prefer to see it

I just got invited to Sigma Delta Epsilon. Although the school can only have so many kids be in it so I had to apply for a spot. You have to be in the top 20% of the class

"you have been invited to the TAU Chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma (DES), a national scholastic honor society for students of Catholic colleges and universities."

And so I have no idea how much this is worth.

Are you from Brazil? What part? I grew up there. Eu sou gaucho! Que legal ver outros brasilieros aplicando. Bom boa sorte!

Yeah, I too paid for the Golden Key. Hmmm, I think at the time it was like $50. Now that I think of, I should have spent that money elsewhere (a nice dinner with a hottie, round of drinks with the buddies, etc.) Sometimes I do hear form Golden Key, once in awhile they send me an application for their credit card. hahaha :meanie:
