ok, so i was just curious about the dental profession, since i am interested in attending dental school in 2006. so i surfed online to look at some graphic pictures regarding general dentistry and oral surgery, and it totally grossed me out (sorry i'm saying this). even though i have a thing for teeth and i think that a pretty smile is the most impressionable facial attribute, i had a sick feeling in my stomach-even though i love the actual academics of dentistry. when i look at dentistry books, it interests me alot, but when i see graphic, bloody pictures, i feel a little grossed out. what should i do??

This is normal. It takes time to develop a tough stomach. Remember the pictures you are seeing online will be a rare sight in real practice, unless you want to go to OMS, etc. Take it day by day.

On the other end of the spectrum, I was looking at some pictures of implant procedures last week. I couldn't get enough. I found it so fascinating. Maybe it's the engineer in me, but implants have got to be one of, if not the most interesting procedure in dentistry for me.

I was looking at the pictures while on campus, and people were walking by the computers and I would hear, "ewww" every few minutes or so, heh.

If anybody has more links to implant procedures, I would greatly appreciate them.

Maybe you should go into research or academics (teaching)??? There are plenty of opportunities for that.

That is what I thought as well until I observed a bilateral sinus lift. That was AWESOME!!!

It's definately normal to be grossed out a little. Go observe some Perio too.... bone and tissue grafts, implants...see all kinds of neet stuff. You'll get over the gross part. Not to mention it'll all seem petty after you take gross anatomy :-D

Nah... Those ain't gross. They are routine! I've seen lots woise. 😀

I was shadowing an OMFS resident at Bellevue Hospital in NYC who was on rotation with Emergency Medicine. EMS brought in one guy with a GSW to the face-- Mandible and maxilla wrecked by a hollow-point pistol round (probably a 9mm or something) that expanded upon impact and just made a mess of things. Now THAT was gruesome.

Wow, thanks for the website. It is the pic of the implants. I mean, I m excited about the new technology, but still kinda gross out with the opening of the gum/teeth areas. It is normal to gross out a little bit. You never want to be desensitized. But you have the opportunity to go into the mouth and get your patients' teeth fixed. For me, that's the most important thing.

This is pretty cool stuff 😀 We haven't gotten much exposure to this sort of thing yet, and it's nice to see there's more to dentistry than class I amalgams (I'm on my fourth attempt doing an O/OL on #3...le sigh).

i looked at all of those pics and ddn't find anything gross.

oh wait, i think its because i have seen much worse than that at the dental offce where i have been working for a while now.

seriously, thebes thing you can do for yourself is to go and volunteer and observe as much as you can. without being up close and personal to the feild, you'd really never know if dntistry is for you. i remember my 1st week when i started volunteering. i didn't wanna even get close to seeing anything with blood etc. i wet home grossed out everyday and thinking is this really what i wanna do in future.

now, somedays i see things that just blow my mind. dentistry is fun ad will continue to get exciting, but you have to make sure you like it.

Nah, we've already done class V amalgams. I think they'd be tougher on a patient, but on a typodont with no soft tissue to worry about they're a piece of cake. We start resins this week (if I can get #3 finished, that is).
