Hello everyone!
I have kind of an odd question, and I was hoping that someone, maybe who has had similar trouble, would be able to help me out 🙂

I took a year off after graduating to figure out what I wanted to do, then decided to do my first year of Uni at the small University-College in my hometown. I did really good this first year and had all A/A+, but class opportunities were limited and I wasn't able to get all my prereqs there. So this year I transferred to a Uni in the city to get my prereqs and finish my degree (major is undecided thus far).

Problem is I really struggled being away from home the first part of the year, I suffered some health problems and my grades fell dramatically (Straight As to D/Cs, and I failed the calculus course I didn't really want to take). Just recently I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with depression, which is why I have decided to take this term off in order to work through it and get my life back on track so I don't hurt my GPA any more than I already have (It's at a 2.9 right now.. yikes!). I plan on returning to Uni in the fall, hopefully in a better state of mind than I am in now.

Do you think this bump on the road will hurt my chances at getting accepted into a Vet School (I'll be applying to U of Saskatchewan eventually)? Do they look down on those who took a little extra time to get their prereqs/undergrad degrees, or who took time off?

I'm aware that I may not ever make straight As again, but I do think that I should eventually have a decent GPA again. I have quite a bit of animal experience so far having worked in a zoo/animal rehab centre for a summer and a vet clinic for 2 summers (I'm told I have a job again there this summer if I want, so that will be 3 by the time fall rolls around). I'm going to use my time off to do some volunteer work as well at a humane society or something.

Any advice or words of wisdom anybody has would be greatly appreciated!

In short, No this bump will not hurt your chances of getting into vet school. There are alot of Vet students that have had BIG bumps in their roads and still managed to be accepted and get through vet school. BUT you MUST retake the classes you got D's and F's in and maybe the ones you got C's in(but probably not) and get A's or B's in them. Then just do well in your classes from now on so you don't have to retake them later!! This "bump", if you can recover from it and show that you can do well, then you will have a good a chance as any other well qualified applicant:luck:

According to WCVM website, you need a minimum of a 75% average overall in order to apply (http://www.usask.ca/wcvm/future_students/WCVM_admissions_brochure.pdf). You should look up their policy on re-taking courses (I cannot find it at the moment). The reason why I mention this is because I have applied to AVC. AVC will not allow you to re-take a course (unless it is older than 6 years). In order to replace a crummy grade on my application, I have to take an upper level course or a course at the same level that covers significantly different material. If this is the case for WCVM, retaking your Cs and Ds will do you no good. So do some digging. If you cannot find an answer to that question, contact somebody about it.
