Hopkins, anyone?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know how many total students they waitlist each cycle? I'm assuming about 50 will come off from the alternate list. I'd like to try and see what sort of chance I have of actually getting in.

hmmm... maybe if we see a missed call from a 410 number, we can frantically call back

That was probably my plan. I have two exams on the 7th and I went as far as to get special permission from my prof's to have extra time on my exam if I get a call from a 410 number in the middle of the test. 😀

Goldtop, I searched 3 different search engines and SDN and was unable to find the answer to this question. I was also sort of wondering this myself.

I missed the call and they just left a short message with a callback number.

bcat and goldtop,

not sure from where (I think a hopkins student), but I've heard that they waitlist about 200 people. Unfortunately, that gives us a about 1/4 shot, worse than the regular admissions process. I guess all we can do now is wait.

when i interviewed (earlier in the yr) they said they interview about 600, accept about 200, and waitlist about 200. the number that get in off the waitlist varies a lot depending on how many accepted students come, but they said that last yr it was about 50 students and that they could come off the waitlist at any point. this is just what i remember though....

i hope this helps. good luck!

Given an interview, the chance of eventual acceptance is therefore around 40% (kind of).

Not bad, but then again it's totally NOT a random process.

This is correct. According to the old stats in found on SDN (from 2004), The acceptance rate was ~43.4%, give or take as Nephilim said. Heres the numbers (Applied, Interviewed, Accepted, Matriculated)

Johns Hopkins University
Total: 4,385 583 253 120
In-state: 272 50 21 13
Out-of-state: 4,113 533 232 107
Women: 2,647 275 126 64
Minorities: 1,650 219 107 54
International: 124 12 6 2
accept: 5.8% interview: 13.3%

One interesting thing I found on the JHU school summary on MDApps (obviously not the most dependable source, I'll admit) was their numbers for interviewed/admitted applicants over the last two years:

Interviewed, Accepted (~MCAT 37.1, ~GPA 3.77): (n = 39)
Interviewed, Not Accepted (~MCAT 37.3, ~GPA 3.85): (n = 28)

Interesting to see that the stats were slightly higher for non-admits (though given sample size it's probably within the margin of error). Supports the claim that they're looking for "fit". Or something.

I found this to be odd too. If you go back farther even, it's still almost the same way:

Interviewed, Accepted (MCAT 35.9, GPA 3.71)
Interviewed, Not Accepted (MCAT 35.0, GPA 3.73)

Even more surprising are some of the people they rejected: >30 people with an MCAT 40 or up.

It's officially March. Who's excited about getting a decision?:scared:

Hopefully in the next two weeks. :crosses fingers:

Good luck everyone!

There's a lot of great medical schools, whichever way the decision goes you'll no doubt be fine. But I hope you get an admission, this is a great place.

Again, fire away with any questions. K, I'm out for a while, will check back in a week or so, hopefully this place will be packed with celebrations.

Hey, y'all.

Don't worry too, too much if you get on the alternate list. I was on it and got in and so did a bundle of my classmates (one of them 3 days before class started). Hopefully you don't have to wait that long, or as long as I did (beginning of July, ironically, the same day I signed a lease for an apt. at the school I was going to) but there's a good deal of hope if you're on the alternate list.

And if you get in, consider coming here. School's tough sometimes, but you'll have great classmates. Honestly, it's been a blast so far. Hard to believe, I'm sure, but come here and you'll find the same.

Best of Luck and holla if you have questions,
Hawkeye

Thanks Hawkeye. I know Kgirl interviewed first week in January. Did anyone else on here interview 1/3 or 1/4? I kind of want to know when our committee meeting is, but I'm apprehensive about calling?

i was under the impression that the committee meeting was the day they make the phone calls---so either march 6th or march 7th. more specific than that (like which interviews they are discussing on which days) i have no idea

Your info is much better then mine. Thanks and good luck!

Okay... I interviewed Feb 1st, but was just told we'd here sometime in early March. Can those who interviewed a few days before and after list their interview dates and the day they were told they'd hear, so I can get a more defined timeline? Thanks!

I interviewed January 25, was told that phone calls would be made March 6th/7th (if I remember correctly - time has both crawled and flown by waiting for all this madness to end...)

I interviewed the second week of February and was told I'd hear back March 20th.

So far I could hear anywhere from the 6th to the 20th....

Anyone with dates in between those?

So I lied, I'm back. One of my good college friends is trying to get in, so I'm re-living my application days all over again. Here's a table of the decision committee meeting; they vary based on whether you interviewed on Thursday or Friday (that's why there's wildly inconsistent dates). They then make calls the next fews days after the meeting, and send letters out for waitlist or rejection.

And by the way, if my information turns out to be somehow wrong, I'm really sorry, I'm not trying to speak as an authority here, but this is the information I have. I'm pretty confident about it.

So a lot of you can expect calls on this Thursday or Friday. Good luck!

Hmm, so would you happen to know which date the Friday, Feb. 1st interviews wouldbe discussed? There's a big diff between March 4th and March 18th. Would it be the 18th because it was a Friday, or does it not work like that?

Thanks so much for your help!

Eh, I just realized that chart is not as informative as I thought it was. I really don't have any more information, I'm sorry, that's all I know. In general, determine if your interview was on a Thursday or Friday, go to that table, and then you should be discussed at the next committee date after your interview. So Fri. Feb. 1st should be discussed on March 18. I think the waitlist is ranked (don't know when) and they pull people off automatically as others withdraw, but I'm not really sure about that, and I'm sure some waitlist discussion goes on during April.

If it's just going to create confusion I'll take it down, please let me know if it's helpful or just panic-inducing.

It's helpful. The only confusing part for me is whether Friday interviews are discussed in the Tues.-Friday meetings or the Tues-Thurs. meetings.

:corny:

I'm gonna hope for the best.

PS It can take a few days for the committee to get everything organized after the meeting and call you, so don't panic, you might not hear till Monday.

And please don't call the office if you don't hear, if me posting this turns into a hassle for them I won't be able to help out any more. Not to mention, a waitlist still equals a solid shot for acceptance.

JHopRevisit, would you mind expanding on how an alternate list spot is still a solid shot at acceptance. I've been on the alternate list since November, and and with the rest of my application process not going so well and just turning into waitlists almost everywhere, I'm hoping things could eventually work out. I've heard different numbers from different sources regarding how many people end up on the list, and when movement happens, so your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

How did you get this info? Did you go to admissions and ask them?

I'm not JHopRevisit, but if you'd like to know what I've been told, here goes:

They will interview approx. 600.
Approx. 200 will get acceptances
Approx. 200 will get waitlists
Approx. 200 will get rejections
Last year about 50 got off the waitlist
The waitlist is supposedly ranked, but when they're looking to pull someone off it, they consider what school they are currently holding, and if it is one that starts early, they may pull off someone else instead.

That's the extent of my knowledge. 🙂

I interviewed the second week of February and was told I'd hear back March 20th.

Hey, do you mind telling if your interview was on Thursday or Friday?

B/c someone else who interviewed on a Friday should hear back this week, and if you interviewed on a Thursday this would make sense.

But if you also interviewed on a Friday, I'm all confused again.

Wait, I thought that those who interviewed on Fridays would hear back around the 18th, and those who interviewed on Thursday would hear back this week.

And I know, I just added to the confusion. Sorry

That's what I thought, too, but two other people on here said they were told they'd hear back on the 6th/7th and they interviewed on Friday!

I guess we should stop speculating and just wait then before we work ourselves into a tizzy.

A Friday, but I don't remember what they told us (or even if they did tell us), sorry

I interviewed on a Friday, and they said we would hear "mid-march." I didn't realize that the Thursday and Friday people weren't evaluated on the same day. I assumed they did it by week, not by date of interview. Sorry if I added to the confusion

I want to say that, from reading previous threads, that they no longer tell students where they are ranked on the waitlist. It seems that they used to send out letters towards may 15th saying you're on the high, middle, or lower portion of the waitlist, but it seems they may have done away with this.

It seems that the chart is in accordance with what I was told on my interview day too. I interviewed on a Friday in January and they told us to expect a call on March 20th if we get accepted. That would make sense if the committee meets on March 18th.

I interviewed on a Thursday in January and they told us around the 6th or 7th, if I recall correctly.

i registered for the revisit but haven't heard back yet...did anyone else get confirmation for registering? just want to make sure that i'm good to go!

I interviewed on a Thursday in January and they told us around the 6th or 7th, if I recall correctly.

March 6th has arrived and not much activity in the JHU thread....I have a feeling that calls won't go out till Monday.

Good luck thursday interviewees. I still have to wait until the 20th 😱

March 6th has arrived and not much activity in the JHU thread....I have a feeling that calls won't go out till Monday.

It's early!

So am I getting this right? I interviewed on a Friday in January, so I won't go to committee until the 18th? Lamezor.

nomoreplz,

yeah, if the above post is correct, we shouldn't hear anything until at least the 20th.

I don't know. =(. I never expected to have so many choices. Right now, of the acceptances I have, probably Columbia. I like Baylor a lot, and it's sooooo cheap, but I'm from Houston (and went to school in Austin) and I'm ready to leave Texas for a bit. However, I have no idea how I'd afford Columbia. Ugh.

But I really, really can't wait for March to be over, just so that I can know exactly what my choices are and start narrowing the list. The suspense is killing me! Not complaining, of course, I couldn't be luckier. What a "problem" to have =p.

Yes, the suspense is killing me, too...I am so anxious to hear something! :scared:

I guess the fact that no one has posted here today about getting a call means that no one has received a call yet today...

Good luck everyone:luck:
