I just sheduled my interview at Hopkins for October 8th, but I am trying to arrange flights and hotel in Baltimore and I dont want to wait for them to send me a packet.

Does anyone know how long the interview day is, Which airport is best to fly into, and Where a good place to stay is?

Thanks for your help,

Clete

Why don't you stay with a host in Reed Hall? They might even have a few rooms to rent. If you're super picky about hotels, the Colonade is awesome (but expensive). It's by the Homewood campus though. You'd have to take the Hopkins shuttle (~30 min) to get the the Med school. Otherwise the Inner Harbor has decent hotels and it's only about 5 minutes away from the med school.

I'd fly into BWI. It's the closest to Baltimore. Although you're either going to have to take one of those airport shuttles or pay for a cab to get to the med school.

Thanks for the help tinkerbelle, but do you know what the shedule is like for the interview day? I am wondering what time I should shedule a flight to leave baltimore after the interview.

Sorry, I can't help you with that question 🙁 But you could try PMing the people that have Hopkins interviews (maybe DrThom & Bubchick?). If none of them can give you the answer, I can ask some friends... I know they host lots of Hopkins interviewees so they should know what the schedule is like.

Hey,

I am flying into BWI and staying in Reed Hall. The packet I got said that to plan on staying until at least 5 PM. Also, when you get your packet, they give you the option of staying with a student or staying by yourself for one night free. If you want to stay a another night (which I am doing), it'll cost 25 dollars. The most important thing for you to is to send in the card they send in the packet as soon as you get it so you can get your room arranged. If you have any other questions, just let me know. 😀

Thanks for the help Dr Thom and Tinkerbelle!

You're welcome! Good luck on the interview :luck: :luck:

there's a light rail that leaves from the airport and goes to baltimore. when i lived there in 2001 it cost 1.25 to ride that light rail. you'll get a chance to see some of the cruddy areas of baltimore, which would be something that you should see if you're considering living there for 4 years.

Congrats everyone on your interviews,

The interview day begins at 11:30, you will have lunch with faculty and then begin the long dreaded "small talk" session which lasts the rest of the day. For those who haven't heard before, yes, you are stuck in a room with your fellow interviewees and student interviewers and yes anything you say and do is fair game for the commitee. But it's really not as bad as you think, and the committe members are TOTALLY cool.

Anyway, you will be called out for 1 faculty interview and 1 student interview (the faculty is scheduled, you'll receive your time when you arrive, but the student interview is just whenever). The faculty interview can last anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour if you really get in a conversation (though they're usually scheduled in 45 minute blocks). The student interview is quick (15 minutes usually) and also BLIND. Only the faculty member will know your app, though the student will look at it before they vote.

Staying in Reed Hall is probably your best best. It's convenient and easy and there are plenty of students around to help you out. You can sleep in, or go to class in the morning with some students, whatever you prefer.

BWI is the airport, there are several ways to get into town. A taxi is about $30 or so, or you can take the light rail. IF you take the light rail, make sure that it's light outside (wouldn't do that in the dark) and that you are not in a hurry as it can take FOREVER. Take it to Penn Station, then get off and go to your left as you come out of the station entrance. There you can pick up the shuttle to campus (at Penn Station and St. Paul) which runs every 30 minutes or so. Make sure you are on the St. Paul St. side and not on the Charles St. side. Get off at the 2nd stop, which will be Broadway and Monument. Reed hall is just down the street on your right. You're looking for a typical yellow school bus which has a big "Local" written on it's sign. If you look closer it says Homewood/JHMI shuttle.

Otherwise, enjoy your interview day! If you've gotten this far, you've obviously got a lot going for you. Interviews here tend to be totally chill, nobody is going to grill you or make you justify why you did things. Just be prepared to talk about yourself and why you want to come to Hopkins!

The interview day will last till around 5. You may get out earlier, but I would not leave too early, even if you get done.

Good luck everyone! PM me if you have specific questions.

hey, after you turn in your postcard to the admissions office detailing your housing requests (such as reed hall or student host) do you get any reply or confirmation?

i havent heard back from them so was just wondering.

Something's up with the light rail, but I'm not sure what--construction? You can still take it, but it involves being on a bus for part of it. Anyway, it's a good, cheap option for getting into town, but it does take a long time. If you are relying on it to catch your flight home, I would make sure to schedule your flight late. I have no idea how long it takes now--ask on the interview thread, maybe?

If the only flight you can get requires you to leave early, let admissions know and they will make sure your interviews are early. It's not ideal to leave early, as the mingling goes on until the end, but they will understand if you can't work around it.

As for staying in Reed or with a host, something will come through, so there's no need for you to book a hotel unless you want to. If you have problems getting a response from admissions, PM me.

Congrats on your interview!
