I guess the one issue I have with the way that Dr. Tufaro is presented, is that he downplays his roots as a dentist. He says in the episode that he was a successful dentist for a number of years, then decided to go to med school and become a surgeon. And when he didn't flunk out, everyone was surprised. He didn't mention that OMFS is a dental specialty and that his path to becoming an OMFS would have been impossible without his dental background. Even the small number of MDs that decide to become OMFS still have to do a few years of dental school.

Also, neither person on the show introduced themselves as OMFS (and actually the term was never used). Both guys have done a PRS fellowship or residency, and Dr. Tufaro introduced himself as a plastic surgeon and Dr. Rodriguez was introduced as a microvascular surgeon. It doesn't matter what medical show is on it seems like they avoid OMFS like the plague.

What's up with that? How do we begin to erase the dental stigma surrounding this country when the top notch dentists are not even acknowledging their own dental background. I also bet ABC had something to do with it... damn media...
I understand the points you're making, but those surgeons are fellowship-trained beyond OMFS and it's not that uncommon for doctors in that situation to introduce themselves as such. Dentistry and OMFS gave them a good foundation on which to build, but they've trained beyond that level, and microvascular surgery ain't dentistry. They're not knocking dentistry; it sounds more like they just aren't dentists anymore. Also, neither person on the show introduced themselves as OMFS (and actually the term was never used). I understand what you are saying, but I guess my point is that both microvascular surgery and facial reconstruction are both in the realm of OMFS. So, I guess it is just me wishing that these guys were contributing back to their original OMFS specialty/background (even though they may have decided to pursue a PRS fellowship) instead of jumping ship and throwing around the plastics name just to start a fire some panties.

did the guy ever day he was trained in omfs? to me it just sounded like he quit dentistry and went into medicine.....

Exactly, and I found what he's saying (or didn't say) a little misleading. He lists his OMFS training on the Johns Hopkins faculty profile page. Here's the sypnosis for the episiode:
"Having left a career as a successful dentist for a career in surgery he was told he could not have, a toughtalking plastic surgeon demonstrates skills unmatched anywhere as he makes the ugly beautiful and gives those without hope a future."

He is no longer an OMFS, but now a PRS. He switched specialties.

You are correct regarding the realm of OMFS. 👍
I think the Maxillofacial name drops plenty of panties..
But yeah.. it does look as though these guys have switched to a different specialties and don't view themselves as Maxfacs anymore.
