Are we supposed to be able to classify hormones as peptide, steroid, or amino-acid derivatives? if so, does anyone have a list or a good strategy for remembering/figuring out the classification?

you should know the functional difference between peptide and steroid hormones for sure... (short term vs. long term, hydrophilic vs. hydrophobic)

steroid hormones include the sex hormones (estrogen, testosterone) and corticosteroids made by the adrenal cortex (eg. aldosterone, cortisol).

other common hormones are generally peptides or amino acid derivatives.

so there's no neat trick to figure out if something is a peptide hormone or steroid, such as "-one" ending = steroid (e.g. testosterone aldosterone, ketone [jk on this one :)])

now that you've mentioned it, it at least works with identifying some steroid hormones... progesterone is another steroid hormone. but obviously not all of them have -one endings.
