Hi fellow Pre-Meds,
The Clinical Care Extender(CCE) program at St.Mary Medical Center(SMMC) in Long Beach, California is currently recruiting new CCE interns for the class of 2005C. CCE at SMMC is an one year program where CCEs will volunteer for 4 rotations of 3 month. Students are required to sign up for one 4-hour shift everyweek, and for one rotation the student is required to sign up for two 4-hour shifts. The students, once accepted into the program, will be able to choose their department for the first rotation (Med/Surg or Telemetry). After which, the student will be able to choose to go to ER, ICU, L&D, Post-Partum, Rehab. Students who have completed their rotation in ER or ICU will then be able to choose the OR, or Surgi-Center(Out patient surgery). The duty of the CCE typically involves patient transport, delivering water/food to patients, and observing procedures.
There was actually a trauma today in the ER, and the CCE there was able to observe everything. In the last few days, the CCEs in OR have observed pen-heart surgery, hip replacement, and many others. A CCE was actually able to observe an open-heart surgery performed in Telemetry due to the urgency of the situation(this is really rare because doctors usually want to limit the amount of people in the room to reduce contamination). The nurses are very nice too. SMMC is located in Long Beach and primarily serves the under-privilaged communities surrounding it, so it is a good way to serve the community.
