What do you guys and girls think about this issue? I mean, things have changed. Women are increasingly outnumbering men in the dental profession; however, this is not the case with professors. There are more male than female professors in d-school, and I'm afraid favoristism is going to be the problem. Any comment?

i would think you would trust ur knowledge

We all know that girls are smarter, so they're all probably just going into private practice where there's more money (on average).

Only happens when the prof is a man... 😉

For every perverted old man who wants to flirt with the students, there is probably another one who thinks women shouldn't be in dentistry and doesn't pay attention to them...don't bother worrying about this at all.

That thought crossed my mind as well, particularly for getting recommendations. Male professors, which are the majority, definatly enjoy the company of the ladies- and you can't blame them. It just sucks for the guys trying to get an in with the professor.

I'm glad you brought this up because it gave me the idea that I should start enrolling in classes offered by women. I usually find it easier to talk to women, and i do recall having a woman english teacher that hated girls. I got an A in that class.

This is a silly concern, in my opinion.

Next thing you know, people are going to want women to be paid as much as men! LOL!

this thread is useless without pictures... 😉

Males still dominate females in MD programs, so I don't think it has to do with intellect. (Please, I'm not here to offend those with an inferiority complex.) As for attractiveness, from all 7 of the tours I've been through, I've yet to meet a female dental student I'd immediately want to bone, so I think that's out of the question. The reason for the ratio might be that women tend to factor in children more and more as their lives progress, i.e. private practice, while some men would rather treat work as a hobby or a haven away from home, i.e. lab research.

What a profound thought...

haha my thoughts exactly...

In response to what the OP originally brought up: I don't think for the most part women get more attention from professors (both male and female) because of their attractiveness. They get more attention because they have better interpersonal communication skills.

Lets just turn this into a pictures thread 🙂

I think both men and women are on the same level in terms of interpersonal communication skills. Men, no matter how well they speak, will not gain as much attention as women. We all know this fact since high school. Remember those good old days?............when girls were going through puberty. Yes, my high school male teachers were mesmerized by those blooming flowers. You can tell what happened to the rest of the male students in class.....(who gets to make-up missing assignments?) As a matter of fact, you should look closely at your male teaching assistants (TA) at your universities.

I think it's genetically programmed for older men to be attractive to young, fertile, beautiful girls (think Darwin). We can all deny this fact up front, but subconsciously, it does exist.

There's no denying it because men can reproduce at older ages than women.. but off of that topic, if I had a male professor who was giving me more attention and whatnot that he was to some of the girls in my class.. well I think I'd be a little uncomfortable :scared:

So older men aren't attractive to young, non-fertile, ugly girls?

About the original subject though, it would be naive to say that favoritism does not exist amongst professors (regardless what their sexual preferences are). I wouldn't worry about it too much though, and instead focus on doing well in school and flirting with your female teachers!

When I taught college chemistry some females got better grades/attention than others. The hotter females may have scored a few more points than their lab partner even if they did the same work, because they were hot.

So it does happen. So girls if your hot, flaunt it in front of your TA's and professors. It does work.

Yet some of those hot girls still got D's because they didnt do all the work or just plane sucked on the exams, yet they were high D's. :meanie:

This topic is pretty funny because I used to work at a bar and you wouldn't believe how many men told me that they would let me do anything to their teeth if I was their dentist. I mean, if my looks can help get people into the office and pay my bills then I'm not going to complain!🙂

haha oh men, can't live with them and can't live without them

Interesting jo07....having said that, people shouldn't advertise much; just go to the bar (if they're hot) with a DMD lab coat to find patients. I know a lot of show-offs who would use their teeth to open beer bottles. You can probably find a lot of them at the bar.

haha that would be the day...

As for me, I'll just stick to office work and treating the patients that come in from a bad night at the bar with teeth missing! I'm sure most of us have known a couple of people in college that had some teeth missing at one point or another after a bad night on the town, know I have!!😀

This thread is worthless without pics.

Who's the first one to volunteer to post up the pics...?

Come on....SHOW YOUR SEXINESS!!!

time for sdn to get shallow...anyone foresee something like "hot or not" arising? a thread for lady dmd/dds' that resemble dr. susan storm in the fantastic four? and one for male pics for the next dental mcdreamy?

Montserrat, whoever that dude is.....he doesn't seem to be capable of fertilizing any child.

we still take it up the ass every day, all day, by all professors - male and female 😀 There is no difference. Except when girls use the giggly sycophantic thing, which male professors resent. But there are just as many arrogant male students to make up for them.

wooo dental school! 😀 (keep a sense of humor about it all, or you'll go insane. My class has been bitching non-stop lately and life would be a lot easier if more people were just able to let things go and realize that yes....they knew it would be like this.) Just be positive, cheerful and, most importantly, be able to accept criticism with dignity and turn it into a learning process.

Depends on which way you interpret this absurd thread... which came first, the unassuming beautiful dental student, or the dirty old professor ?

too bad you didn't run into me 😉

first of all, being the huge feminist i am, i want to say that m/f ratios have absolutely nothing to with intelligence nor superiority.
the whole children and family card needs to be dropped in the 21st century, and it's as awfully amusing coming out of a male mouth as it is to watch prolife protests being composed of middleaged sterile overweight balding men.
otherwise when speaking of specialties, for example, nyu's entering MPH classes have about a 1:4 m:f ratio. these are simple generalities that can and may be associated with GENDER, not SEX.
anyways, today's undergraduate institutions alone are retroacting on affirmative action as there's been a sharp decrease in the number of male applicants.
secondly, i think attractiveness can be a burden simply because i don't think you're taken as seriously in a scientific community. granted there's many professions where it can work to one's advantage, but not necessarily a medical one.
for one, i know my high heels were negatively noticed in any lab at my ****ty midwestern puritan lutheran college. pardon me for not wanting to wear sweats and ponytails when out in public. dear god. 🙄

This comment brings up an interesting point. With more females entering the dental profession it may actually add to the shortage of dentists.

I've been told that female dentists tend to retire earlier and tend to take more time off during their working years (for kids, etc.). So, even if the amount of dentists stays constant as more women enter the profession the amount of working hours will decrease.

It's good in a business sense, but not that great for public oral health care.

Just a thought.

Interesting thought. And it has much merit too!

Who would have thought, equal opportunity adds to our healthcare crisis.

Women are going to ruin people's smiles everywhere! :scared:

So Gentlemen, can i have a list of 'the most high rate of beauty queen accepted dental schools' here, perhaps?
LOL, So I can get in this cycle!!!!????🙄

I'm gonna second this- they also (as a general rule) work fewer hours per week than men do.
So as older dentists begin to retire, and the percentage of female dentists increase (meaning fewer working hours on average), the pool of dentists is slowly diminishing (at least for a while).

Yeah, but we make up for the deficit by being better dentists 😀 😀 😀
